ooo ok thanx…
well i finished housing an i picked mesa but im not gonna celebrate yet since u picked mesa and u didnt get it…lol
even if i dont get mesa it should be ok i guess :)

I found out i got mesa today. Problem is though is that my classes seem far from my dorm. Like I’m taking math 2b, chem 1a, MAE 10 and Writ 39B.

How far of a walk am I looking at?

you kind of have to give us class locations for us to help, haha

trust me, you don’t want to choose a community based on where your classes are.

First of all, I don’t think any of those classes are going to be significantly closer to ME. In fact, writing 39b will probably be in Humanities which is much closer to mesa.

More importantly, your classes are going to change each quarter. No matter where you live, you’re going to be moving around campus a lot if you’re taking classes to fulfill ge requirements.

well if you were looking at a map from uci some of the numbers of the buildings are 601 (writing)502 (engineering) 400 (math) 415 (math) 411 (chem) and 315 (chem). how long of a walk are we looking at here?

And Sndebrosse I’m figuring if I stay with engineering I will be taking math, chem and physics for the rest of the year. So won’t all those classes be in one little area anyhow?

^not necessarily…
classes can be all over campus and ur prob not going to be taking just chem, math, psychics the whole year u do have GEs to fulfill. and actually I feel like mesa actually seems closer to that area of campus even though on the map it seems farther…
regardless its only like 10-15 walks so its not that bad.

Ah I see what you mean. Like my engineering class is in a humanities hall. haha. maybe next quarter I’ll get lucky and most of my classes will be closer to mesa.

If there are gaps between my classes do you recommend me walking 15 minutes back to my dorm or just to chill at the library all day?

And when you say up to 15 minutes is that from one like mesa all the way to the other side like ME or the engineering hall?

Thanks for the help :)

well I guess that depends how much time u have and where the next class is. like if its close to where u are and dorms are lik 10 minutes away but class starts in 30 it wouldnt really make sense to walk back spend 10 minutes in dorm and walk all the way back…
but its a choice…
this summer I lived in calmindon in ME which is close to pippins pretty far into ME… I had class at 8 and left at 745 and got to my class at 855-857 which was in humanities hall usually the prof. wasnt even there…
its not that far… even when its far uci isnt that spread out…

BUMP~~~~~~~~~~~

Which of the two have fewer people commute on weekends? Meaning non dead dorms on weekends?

I think both have equally the same amount of people who go home on the weekends. It’s also contingent on where your hallmates live. If they’re from NorCal(where a lot of people are from) or out of state, then they will most likely stay in the hall on the weekends unless they can afford to go home every weekend on a plane lol. So you’ll have people on the weekends to socialize and hang out with. It will be really unfortunate if the majority of your hallmates are from SoCal, because you’ll have an empty hall :(. And that’s because most people who live in SoCal seem to go home a lot often since they probably live close by.

It depends on how long the gap is. If you live in ME, and your at lets say… RH, and your next class starts in 45-1 hour, just go to the sci library and spend some time there if your next class is in the vicinity.

If your gap is around 2 hours, I recommend going back to the dorm.

From what I can tell right now, although I go home almost every weekend, I think mesa has less dead dorms during the weekends.

^no its deader. even during the week.

(I live in mesa.)

depends on your dorm and the type of person you are. i live in mesa right now and i love it. my dorm is pretty active and most ppl in my dorm love mesa too.

yup, it totally depends on your dorm and if you’re the type of person who is willing to socialize and be open-minded. I live in middle earth and i’ve seen A LOT of hall pride especially during the basketball and dodgeball tournaments that are held here(i don’t think mesa has these types of tournaments) and during Community Council meetings. Not only are people prideful about their hall and their themed cluster, but also of Middle Earth and that is a good thing. And it also depends on whether or not you have a phase 1 hall or a phase 3(phase 4 being the max for mesa halls) because phase 1s in middle earth have around 50 people(my hall having 47 people) and i think we get a lot more closer than the later phases who have around 80 people lol where most of the people hang out in cliques and don’t know every single person in the hall. But then again, it also depends on your hall staff and if they provide programs for your hall to participate in. In middle earth, the community council is absolutely on top of their programs…not sure about mesa :

Middle Earth is the best place to live on your freshman year. Why? Its like a 10 min walk to the ARC where as Mesa you have to take a 30 min bus shuttle, ME have two common places to eat at which have better food than the one at Mesa plus we have cooler names for them, aka brandywine and pippins (a lot of mesa kids often go eat at our commons than theirs which is around 10-15 min walk distance), ME is much closer to campus while Mesa is a little off campus, theres always something going around at ME, such as previosly they offered free ice skating, yoga night, learn to break dance, sadies hawkins dance, Glee night at the basketball courts, free rock climbing at the ARC, etc. Based from my many friends that lived in Mesa, its boring there, ppl are always inside their rooms, RA doesnt hold any events. But it depends on the hall and the RA, what makes your place active. If you dont want walk too much, I highly suggest ME. The Community is very active there. Dont be just be choosy about the interior and exterior buildings between Mesa and ME. Think about the community and the people you will meet. Yea I’m bias for ME.

What’s the size difference roughly between Mesa and ME?

Mesa tends to have larger rooms than Middle Earth. So if you’re looking for a more spacious living setting, I’d opt for Mesa Court. The communities differ in size as well. Mesa Court is more spread out and open, while Middle Earth is clustered closer together (and it’s closer to the main campus unless you’re an arts major).

Yeah Mesa does have a little bit bigger rooms, but in actuality, some of the mesa rooms are smaller than middle earth rooms (Nubes i.e.)

Middle earth has more events and activities, middle earth is more convenient, next to pippins and brandywine and closer to lecture halls and clasrooms.

Most of the mesa people that I have spoken with would have rather chosen to live in middle earth.

How far is each to the ARC via walking and driving? To the main campus if you’re not an art major? Thanks for all your answers!

ARC via walking from middle earth takes 12-20 minutes

via driving, probably what 5 minutes? I haven’t driven to the ARC yet, but I’m guessing.

To the main campus, which is around the langson/flagpole area I assume, from middle earth takes around 7-8 min.
