so does mesa doesnt have internet in its rooms?

of course it does.

the wired t1 internet is freakin fast.

they dont have wireless though (but in my hall people put up their own wireless routers and shared the wireless password.)

oh ok good, thanks

Is Middle Earth really socially dead like the generalizations seem to make it out to be? Cause I actually liked the atmosphere more there when I visited, but that's without talking to very many people that actually go there. Cause I actually liked the atmosphere there more but don't know much about the dorm life once you actually are living there.

It actually is kind of socially dead over there, however it is closer to campus

What theme halls do you recommend in mesa? I want to be in a social hall, but I don't want to be in one that parties and drinks/smokes tooo much. Any suggestions?

What theme halls do you recommend in mesa? I want to be in a social hall, but I don't want to be in one that parties and drinks/smokes tooo much. Yet i don't want to be in a hall where the social life is dead and its all about studying. Is there a hall where there's a balance between fun and school? Any suggestions?

Deng reading this, i can't make up my mind because i am that nerd type person so i'd probably fit in in ME but i'd like to be social and have a nice room at MC

I have to make a visit for sure now. :/

I ate at Mesa for Honors Experience Day, and they have an icee machine. Does Middle Earth have an icee machine at their dining hall too? lol, i love icees...

Yes Middle Earth has an Icee Machine. ahahaha, are you really going to let that be the deciding factor in where you live?

Middle Earth is not socially dead, there is all kinds of stuff going on. You can always find things to do, you do not have to live in Mesa Court to do anything.

From my experience theme housing matters very little. I hardly even remember what theme I am in. The theme you choose will maybe determine one or two events all year(maybe). Whether your hall does stuff will really be dependent on your RA. I am in the "Intellectual Something" Theme in ME and the atmosphere is by no means anti-social study all the time. I happen to have a great RA and end up doing all kinds of things with the hall

As to reinforce what Tatertots said, theme experience will matter little compared to the people you will (or not) be living with. The people I lived with during freshmen year gave me my first impression and sense of what young Americans were like (I lived in a foreign country until I came to UCI)...and I became quite pessimistic of them :D.

Guys, I just got rejected from UCLA, but whatever, UCI kicks ass

I love the school and although I'm waiting for Cal's decision, F that, UCI is the shiz!

I'm gonna be more active here now, and to all u guys, I personally have been in UCI, it's beautiful, has an In-N-Out, it's asian heaven, people are nice except for a few in some areas and well

UCI

University of Cool Immigrants :)

Guys, I've been to BOTH, extensively.

And here's the way I see it

Middle Earth PROS
-Has a nicer commons diner
-Has some cool themes that Mesa doesn't have
-Closer to some of the social ecology buildings, bio buildings too
-Closer to one of the theaters
-Relatively closer to Aldrich Park

CONS:
-All buildings look the same
-Brown color, pavement everywhere makes it look dull
-Actual rooms are nice, but not as nice as Mesa

MESA PROS:
-Amazing Dorm buildings
-Has some themes that Middle Earth Doesn't Offer
-More Green Areas, less "monotone" feel
-Closer to Arts (Visual And Performing) Buildings
-Closer to Administration and Student Center and Student Village/In-N-Out

CONS:
-It's farther from the science buildings
-Commons diner isn't as good and cool as Pippin
-Can get a little confusing, all dorms do look the same.
-It's on the far end of UCI, farther from the ARC

If you're the nerdy, but fun type definitely go to Middle. If you love things like LOLCats go to Middle.

Mesa just had a marijuana drug bust recently. 'M just saying.

reposting this from another thread i just replied to:

you have to take all feedback with a grain of salt because experiences are so subjective. i wanted mesa but was placed in middle earth, and i suppose for the most part i'm happy with it. from an objective point of view:

about middle earth:
closer to main campus (unless you're in claire trevor; then mesa is closest to your classes)
closer to where the good food is (you can eat anywhere, but if you live in mesa and want food at middle earth you will have to walk 15-20+ minutes to get food there)
buildings are closer together
a safer community (next to police dept, RAs actually do rounds.. no offense. also check crime log rates, a lot more happens at mesa than ME)
key cards (doors automatically lock; if you lose/break your key it's less expensive to replace)
architecture is more modern (hotel-like)
programs every week for people living in ME (ice skating, etc.)
closer to the ARC (gym) -- if you're in mesa you would take the shuttle, but from the edge of middle earth it's about a 10 minute walk, tops
co-ed suites (my building has one per floor and the other suite is single-gender) -- however i saw no advantages to this over mesa (it's not like you CAN'T walk over to room of the opposite sex); in fact the single-gender suites (at least girls) seemed to bond better than co-ed suites
can raise your bed as high as you want (depending on how old your building is but most beds should be able to do this)

mesa:
bigger rooms (not sure if this is true; one friend got a double room with 2 closets per person and another friend got a small converted study room)
if you like a camp/park-ish feel, mesa is better (lots of trees, really spread out)
from my POV, people seem to bond more over in mesa because of the building layout (suites are smaller). however it does depend on the building you get (could be small or big, depending on when it was built)
mesa = party community. totally different from middle earth. (not always the case but from what i hear, the RAs in mesa are more relaxed and basically look the other way when drinking is occurring)
more storage space (can't raise bed but you have more storage already there because of drawers under the bed, etc.)
desk chairs are cushioned (haha)

single vs. double:
having a roommate doesn't guarantee having a best friend, or whatever the misconception may be. many people have had problems with their roommates (myself included; we don't bicker but i would hardly call us friends) and the roommate compatibility form is basically crap and didn't really affect anything (in my case).
there will always be the chance that you will get a roommate who is horrible, but there's the chance that you will have someone great. however it is nice to branch out

will update with more comments as i read through the posts

the themes do not really play a large role except for the programs offered in the buildings. i was in IR (interpersonal relationships) but only saw many cliques in my own building. but this isn't always the case (again, everything is subjective).

turning in your application early doesn't guarantee you will get the community you want

also, a friend of mine lived in AV her first year and loved it. no meal plan required (cheaper, because you can live off tv dinners if you want to) but it's further from the campus core. (it's near the gym/greek houses)

I just want to say this(since this was originally why I picked Middle)
Middle Earth is not closer to Bio....its almost directly across campus. =D Though Mesa isn't really much closer. Middle is definitely closer to most of campus though such as the Social Sciences, Social Ecology, Comp Sci, Engineering, Physical Sciences.

are there triples at UCI?

Yes there are triples. I know last year (my first year) a lot of people who wanted doubles got put into them as well.

^wouldn’t that suck?

I can stand one more person but two

IDK… what if the third one makes everything a mayhem

so if i have a friend or friends who want to dorm together, what is the % of us not being able to? (Approximately)
