Middle School Behavior affecting chances

In all of high school, my behavior has been pristine and I have not gotten into trouble once. However, in middle school, I was given lunch detention 20 times, not through a teacher, each time through a referral to the main office for things ranging from pushing a kids head into a wall (gently, he wasn’t even hurt), to being disrespectful to a sub. Will these lunch detentions be reported on my high school transcript to colleges? Will colleges be able to see these behavioral issues? And by the slim chance they do, will it affect by chances of getting into an ivy league school?

Nobody will know

Your behavior in middle school will in no way affect your chances when applying to Ivies. That stuff happened in middle school, not high school. You’re fine, don’t stress about it

OMG!!! Thank you so much!!
So colleges wouldn’t even see it?

Go get a copy of your high school transcript and see for yourself. You have a legal right to see your own transcript, so go Monday to your high school transcript office (registrar or whomever handles it) and ask what you need to do to order an unofficial transcript. It may require that you fill out a form or pay a couple dollars. It will have the same information as your “official” transcript, the only difference being the unofficial one is what they give students, and the official one is the one that is sent directly from the high school to colleges, employers, scholarship orgs., etc. What you will probably see is that the only info from middle school on your high school transcript is a listing of any classes you took in middle school for high school credit.

In fact, any HS kid reading this, go order an unofficial transcript and be sure it is accurate. It is best to get errors corrected before you have transcripts sent to colleges your senior year (my kids’ transcripts had errors - 3 kids, 3 errors: a pass-fail class marked as for a grade, a high school class taken in middle school left off the transcript, and an honors class marked as on-level).

They won’t see it. Just keep doing what you’re doing now and you should be fine!

Thanks for the great reply Barfly. But would you say that even if colleges saw it they would ignore it and would not affect decisions?

“for things ranging from pushing a kids head into a wall (gently, he wasn’t even hurt)”

The fact that you have downplayed this (“he wasn’t even hurt”) is very bothersome. However, I don’t think your middle school behavior shows up on a high school report. Bully for you.

I have no idea, @Defuse. If I were making admission decisions, I doubt that I’d be able to ignore it. But get a copy of your transcript next week so you will know exactly what admissions people will see. I suspect your sordid past will not show up on your HS transcript.

And go apologize to your parents for making them nuts when you were in middle school!

Unless it involves a SERIOUS felony, everyone gets a total pass on middle school.

@GMTplus7, not EVERYONE gets a total pass on middle school! I’m still holding on to a grudge against the mean girl who picked relentlessly on by best friend!
