Hi, I'm thinking about applying ED II to Middlebury and though I'm absolutely in love with the school, I'm still not sure about their creative writing and literature programs. I've heard many things and I'm now kind of confused as to what to believe in. I might not major in any of these two, but writing is part of my life and I want to be sure I'll be somewhere where the English department is strong. Can anyone who has taken courses in any of these say whether they think they are strong courses in Middlebury? Also, if I were to compare Vassar to Middlebury in this area, what would you say?

One of the very best creative writing programs you will find at a liberal arts college. Faculty also teach (workshops) at the flagship writers’ conference in the country – the first of its kind, going back to the 1920s — the Bread Loaf Writers’ Conference, which Robert Frost helped create and then at which he taught for decades. You will find more creative writing courses, which sit in the English and Am Lit Department, at Middlebury than at any liberal arts college, as the students are very literate, self-selecting to the college because of the program, and are extremely talented. Bonus for rising seniors at Middlebury: about 10 are given fellowships to attend the Bread Loaf Writers’ Conference and learn from among the very best poetry, fiction, and non-fiction writers you will find in any one Writers’ Conference.
