I am thinking of Middlebury for my HS daughter who is interested in creative writing and foreign languages. When I mentioned this to my son, a freshman at Tufts, he said "Middlebury's a drug school." What??? He doesn't know anyone from Middlebury, never been to Middlebury, but insists that this is the school's reputation--at least among Tufts freshmen. Comments please.

and they all chose Tufts because they heard bad stuff about Middlebury????

It is not a drug school dont' worry. I am studying here right now.
And even if people do, your daughter will not find it in her room.

I second that. I am a sophomore at Midd and I am appalled that anyone would think so poorly of Middlebury. Middlebury might have that reputation because we do have a healthy population of pleasantly crazy people who play frisbee in the snow and go to environmental protests, but they are hardly hippees. I can safely say that drugs will be on any college campus in this country, but I can equally safely say that I have never encountered anyone here with a drug problem, nor do I think I am likely to. I would hate to see Middlebury lose part of its applicant pool because of this inaccurate reputation.

My son is a freshman. He reports that the partying he has observed/participated in at Middlebury is much tamer than the typical partying at his suburban high school. I was very aware of high school nightlife and it was an ongoing discussion topic for us. He has no reason to conceal this sort of information from me and I have no reason to believe that the situation is any different than he has observed. The students are busy and active at Midd and take their academics seriously. He is happy there and doing well academically. I talked to him tonight for 20 minutes. Besides his January term class which he loves (Midd is 4-1-4) and an evening workshop, in the last week he has skiied twice, attended a concert, attended a town hall meeting on campus alcohol use, and was on his way to a party tonight (Saturday night) for which he was dressing up. When I asked him how things were going, he said, "fantastic" and that is not a term he uses lightly. Do your own research and come to your own conclusions!
