Drinking at Middlebury?

I've heard that there's a large amount of drinking at Middlebury, can anyone comment to this? Is Middlebury's drinking culture more than at other colleges?

There's a fair bit of drinking at Middlebury, but it's not more prevalent than at similar schools (Williams, Amherst, Bowdoin, Dartmouth, etc.). Midd has substance free housing and plans many events for students who don't drink.

There isn't as much drinking as you'd think.

ok… here’s the deal… Took son to visit Midd yesterday. It was a thursday night and since he knows no one except remotely and no one where he would have been comfortable saying, “can I spend the night?” he got no real insight in the social scene. So in every respect except for this, I would say Midd would be his top choice and a great fit. Today, however, we spent the day at Colgate where there are a few kids from home and is staying in the dorm tonight (Friday). Obviously a much better night to be on campus for the party scene.

So, it’s not as if I want to encourage my kid to party, but I recognize the desire for a full college experience and that includes being entertained – whether that be parties in the dorm, social houses, sports events, or whatever. I wonder however do you think there will be a real cutback on imported entertainment with the budget cuts at Midd? It seems that the kids do take advantage of it but is that just what the tour guides and admission folk are supposed to say?

We head back tomorrow and will again spend the night. I am going to be relaying all the social threads here about Midd, but if the campus already knows “these times are changing” what’s the word on that? Have there been rumblings? Or…

well, middlebury is a very small and tough school without frats, so that affects the drinking/party scene. it’s definitely not comparable to that of a big university, but you can find something to do almost every weekend night, though only a couple and they tend to be lame. drinking/party scene generally revolves around suite parties or pre-gaming that’s crammed into a dorm room. it’s definitely not a lively scene, but there’re fun nights once in a while. the social houses are generally fun, but there’re only a couple and they don’t have open parties every weekend.
as for the budget cuts, that would really affect the social houses only, and as far as i’m concerned their budgets are approved as is for the next year.
so in a nutshell, middlebury isn’t the coolest and most fun school to party, there’s a drinking scene, of course, but it’s not as wild as one would expect from a “full college experience.”
