Hello! So I am a high school senior and I'm seriously torn between Middlebury and Boston College. They're completely different schools, but there's just certain things about each one that keeps me second guessing myself. Granted, they're both reach schools, so the choice might be made for me, but I was hoping to get some insight about what ya'll think are the main differences or pros/cons.

Virtually everything is different. What are your priorities? What do you want to study?

Two excellent schools which I’d consider pretty even academically. You have a non-sectarian LAC in VT and a Jesuit university outside of Boston…really only you can decide which is the beast environment/fit for you.

BC is more conservative and much more emphasis on sports. Might look at Holy Cross and Bucknell also.

I’m looking at international relations, and I know Middlebury has a really strong program so that’s what drew me in. However, it’s just a little too small and remote for what I had in mind, which drew me to BC. I like that BC is close to Boston so it would be easier to get internships there. However, for BC, the core curriculum is pretty strict, and the fact that it’s separated into different colleges, so say I changed my mind and wanted to study business it would be really hard for me to switch schools. That’s what I really loved at Middlebury, that the required classes are pretty easy to do and the fact that to fulfill your degree you just need to take the required classes. Also, at BC, the international relations program is super competitive and you actually have to apply to get into it, so that turned me away a little bit.

Believe me, internship opportunities are better in Midd. You do not do internship during the school days, internship is mostly during the summer. Of which, especially in international relations, IMHO,Midd had a better name and thus easier to get those internships. And yes, Midd is in middle of nowhere, but you are going there for study, not for fun.

Just my 2c.

I’m going to side with artloversplus. Midd is just a better school, so unless its rural location rules it out for you, it’s probably the better choice.

This really should come down to whether you would rather live in a big city for four years, or in the country for four years. They are very different environments.

Are you more career driven? Then BC.
Do you love skiing and hiking? Then Midd.
Do you love going out on the town? Then BC.
Would you rather go camping? Then Midd.

Etc.

MIDD all the way.

If you can, make another visit to each. Spend a little more time on campus and get to know some students, if possible. The cultures will be different and the more time you spend the easier the decision will be (assuming you’re admitted to both).

Not sure what you mean by this.

I don’t see the need to “choose” between the schools now, unless you are considering applying ED to Midd (which I would recommend if your stats are in the ballpark and you think you think it is a great match.)! Is that your intention?

Midd has stronger academic reputation.

Are you trying to decide where to apply ED?
If not, apply to both and come back here in March :)

Yes I’ve decided to ED to Midd! Thanks for all the help
