Middlebury vs. University of Chicago.. HELP!

I'm currently unsure of what I want to do.. I'm thinking English, Psychology, Pre-Med. I'm mostly likely going to pursue a science for a career.. so I'm trying to figure out where I would get a better PreMed experience.
I know Midd is a great school, but I always hear about their languages and economics.. not really their sciences.
I have to make this decision pretty soon, and both schools are similar in price.

Both schools are extremely different, but I can see myself fitting in at both.

UChicago:
Pro's: Intellectual, nerdy, quirky atmosphere.
They would have everything I'd want to study.
Research opportunities
Well-known
Better for Pre-Med?

Con's: Less flexibility with the Core
Quarter system
Super competitive student body
I'm worried I wouldn't get to know any of my teachers/they don't care
Fun goes to die?

Middlebury:
LAC- small classes, caring professors
Great English/Humanities programs
J-term

Con's: Maybe it's too small and isolated?
Too Jock-y/athletic
Huge party scene
less opportunities?

I've visited both schools, made pros/cons lists, flipped a coin, and have still gotten nowhere. I don't have a gut feeling, and I have no idea on what I should base my decision.

Any input would be great!

Oh, I’m also worried about the lack of diversity at Midd. It seemed very white when I went.
I understand they have a substantial international population; however, I’m Indian, and I didn’t see very many Indians & Asians at Midd when I visited.

Honestly, it sounds like you prefer U of Chicago. You have more pros listed for U of Chicago than you do for Midd. Plus, the cons for U of Chicago are manageable. I’m sure you’d fit in at a competitive environment.

I’m also worried about the diversity at Midd (even though it’s too late because I’ve already made my decision). I’m also not wealthy, which is kind of uncomfortable considering I’ve heard that a good 67% of the student population is rich, preppy white kids.

Whatever decision you make, I hope you’ll be happy there and that my input helped you in some way :)

Ah, well the best of luck to you at Midd! I’m sure you’ll love it!
Yeah… that was something I was worried about too. I really like Middlebury alot, but it seems very homogenous too. They have a strong international population though, so that will definitely be cool :)

Nothing much… if you are part of that group! If your are not, then CLEARLY there is a HUGE problem.

ALso, diversity opens your eyes to possibilities. On the other hand, homogeneity in the long term can have a stagnating effect. But this is just my opinion.

I agree with farkula, but I would not describe Midd as a homogeneous place. Racially, it is fairly diverse with about 25% of the student body being of color (that number will very likely be greater for the class of 2016 and beyond). While clearly the institution can still work to diversify the student body more, there is certainly racial, ethnic and cultural diversity and pride on campus. I think that the culture at Midd is one where people accept difference and try to learn from those differences, be it racial, ethnic, religious or socioeconomic.

I think U Chicago seems like the better choice. If you’re thinking pre-med, it has a lot stronger program than Middlebury. I also agree with the first poster though in terms of the pros / cons you listed.

Oh and UChicago’s student body is not super competitive, all the students will be highly motivated, intelligent and used to getting A’s but they will not go out of their way to make others not get the grades they deserve. The students I met were all extremely willing to help others working on similar problem sets.

Middlebury is no different.

So it should not be listed as a con for UChicago… I did not
mean to degradate Middlebury, the OP directly addressed UChicago as having super competitive students.
