Hello, I applied to Middlesex for the upcoming fall, and it is by far my number one choice. I love everything about the school, but have heard a few negative things about it that scare me a little bit. These are all rumors/opinions of people I've spoken with, but I just want to make sure they aren't true/aren't as bad as they sound.

1) The new headmaster has turned MX into a jail. The students have very limited freedom.
2) The new headmaster has also taken all of the fun out of the school.
3) There was a recent sex scandal that has had a negative effect on the entire school.

If any current students/parents can elaborate a bit more on what these mean it would be greatly appreciated.

I’m not sure what you mean by “new headmaster.” The current head of school has been there for 10 years.

Sorry, I should have said current.

I heard about the sex thing too. The questions is (and I didn’t get to read it anywhere from a credible source) was it hazing, or voluntary? If it was voluntary, then there’s really nothing on the school. People have voluntary sex all the time and if that girl decided she would like to have sex with five guys, that’s her business. However, if it was hazing and she was being forced to have sex with those guys, I’d run.

One of my kid’s best friends went to Middlesex as a day student. The friend didn’t have much free time (for example, had classes and sports on Saturdays and spent Sundays doing homework), but otherwise seemed very happy.

I am a Middlesex Parent and my child is very happy (as are her friends). They work hard but enjoy it.
I think you have Middlesex confused with another school: there is no sex scandal.

Readerbig. Yes I did. I PM some people to apologize but I didn’t write it here. I was mistaken about MX

AH. It was Milton Academy.

Preface: I am a current student at Middlesex.

1) The new headmaster has turned MX into a jail. The students have very limited freedom.
As for this I can’t really speak to what mx was like before the current head of school–she’s been here for about ten years. I have heard, however, from faculty that the climate used to be very different. Middlesex was a major party school and was generally laid back (to a fault) and just overall very lax. The current head of school, who came from Groton, began instituting policies that were much more strict and imposed a lot more administrative control (as opposed to faculty control that had been more prevalent before). So yes, Middlesex is definitely a lot LOT stricter than it used to be, and that sucks, but it’s also probably safer.

2) The new headmaster has also taken all of the fun out of the school.
Pretty much covered it in the last question.

3) There was a recent sex scandal that has had a negative effect on the entire school.
This is not true.
