Middling GPA problem.

I graduated from College in the fall and am currently taking a break to get some internships and (hopefully starting this summer if all goes well) some work experience under my belt. However, I am taking a GRE prep course starting next month and am thinking of applying for Grad programs in English for the next admissions cycle. Here is my question. I have an undergrad GPA of 3.05 and a Major GPA of 3.45, I have two excellent recommendation letters, and one I have no idea about, that I assume to be merely adequate, with little incite beyond an A in the class (didn't know the professor that well). I am at a loss as to what types of programs I should be applying to. I think my end goal is probably going to be a PHD, however, I am not sure my grades are really high enough to pursue one right off the bat. Should I first go for a masters and then use my presumably stronger grades in that program to apply for PHD's, or are my grades good enough for some lesser PHD programs?

If so which ones, and are they worth it? Any suggested masters programs to look at would also be most appreciated. I am at a loss as to what I should be looking for.

With an undergrad GPA of 3.05, you’re looking at a steeply uphill road for Ph.D admissions at any program worth attending.

Why do you want a graduate degree in English? What career track are you interested in that requires such a degree?

Reason I ask is that the market for English doctoral students is absolutely horrible and you should not borrow a dime to get a graduate degree in the field.
