<p>So I found out today I moved from 5th in the class to 3rd…will Brown and other schools use this as my class rank when considering my application?</p>

it wont harm you, that’s for sure 
it may help a little if you went up on the % bracket (for example, you went from top 10% to top 5%) or something. but if you stay within the same % bracket, then it doesn’t really make a difference</p>
<p>That’s good! If your counselor hasn’t sent your mid-year report yet, talk to her and see if she’ll emphasize that. 
Even if you don’t move out of your percentile, it’s still a good sign. You didn’t mess up your first semester of senior year.</p>
