Are these evaluated with your application for all RDers or are they merely checked for the accepted applicants to see how they’re still doing? If they do look at it with the rest of your app would it be worth it to ask my GC to add a note explaining my rank situation? (we have 20 people sharing rank 1 but my grades are higher than the rest with the most rigorous courseload). I’d really like Brown to know this because I hear that if 20 people share a spot they have to assume you’re rank 10 (20/2).

As a side note, although I wouldn’t ask my GC to mention it, but I’ve still maintained my average even with the death of my father last Nov, so things have been incredibly difficult and stressful lately (I am ready to explode). I don’t want to work this hard if I am only going to hurt myself while simultaneously receiving no distinction between myself and the guy who barely makes the rank-1 spot with an 89.5-rounded-up average. What are my options and when should I send this report in? Sorry if I sound rude or anything, if so I promise it was unintentional.

They look at midyear reports for RD applicants. If I were you, I'd ask for the note explaining the rank thing.

I was wondering what they look at in the mid year report of an accepted student.
As in, how bad would your grades have to be for them to rescind you?

Personally, I'm not too worried, the seniors last year did a marvelous job of slacking off second semester and no one was rescinded, but I think my mom would like a little peace of mind.

I called Brown University yesterday, and you need to maintain a 1.5 GPA.

oh man chocoholic, you are so on top of things!

and yet.. so familiar sounding...

1.5?!? You have got to be kidding? It's like saying you don't even need to care anymore about anything.

But all in all is the Midyear report an appropriate place to add more information previously unsaid in the initial GC rec?

when do we need to send out midyear reports?

legendofmax - As far as I know, the midyear report is definitely appropriate for additional information, depending on the student. Your GC should update Brown on everything (but remind him just in case), as your situation seems especially remarkable.

inebriated - The application says "no later than mid-february."

Sorry to hear about your father, legendofmax.

Why are 20 people sharing the same rank?!?

Our school gives top rank to people with a 4.0 GPA. A 4.0 GPA can be achieved with a 90%+ average in all classes which I think is ridiculous because not everyone has a full-IB courseload. That means anyone with a few easy classes can get a 4.0 if they get all As. Meanwhile I have a full courseload with all classes at a score of 97% or greater, and I think that this fact should be told to my schools.

Thank you, btw

definitely clear that up with the brown adcom so they have a better understanding of your situtation

dawgquelle: Again I ask, is doing so via the midyear report ok? That's my main question I guess...

its fine. does your gc know about your situation well? i dunno your counselor personally, but i would assume in the midyear report he would talk about your circumstance.

midyear report is fine.

Is there a space on the mid-year report for comments? If so, I would ask your GC to note your GPA is the highest. The courseload probalby speaks for itself. Also, isn't Brown the one that gives scholarship money to #1 and #2 in the class? I think you should check into that and mention it to your GC so he sees the importance of the note. I have no idea how Brown will handle your gpa/rank issue but I do think you deserve them to at least be aware of it.

I'm sorry for the loss of your father. Mine died when I was 20, he was sick for a year. I pretty much crashed and burned for a year before pulling myself together so I give you 1000% credit for staying on course.

I thought ivies didn't give merit scholarships.

There is usually room on midyear reports to add additional information. Definitely have your gc clear this up. Not only for Brown but for all your schools.

I could be wrong about the scholarship thing. I've read so many websites, I might have Brown mixed up with another school.
