I did as well @bodangles. I agree with your points and I also think it depends on your personal study habits/limitations, whether or not you plan to take any other summer courses in conjunction with the math course, and which professor you take. It wasn’t easy to get an A in Calc III over the summer (I worked my tush off) while working part-time, but it was doable for me. It won’t be doable for everyone, and that’s okay. Definitely know your limits and if you think that taking calculus over the summer is something you’re willing to do, then do it!
I wouldn’t recommend taking Calc II over the summer however, since Calc II was quite difficult for me to get through. But that’s just me personally. In either case, Prof. Leonard’s calculus lectures on YouTube were quite helpful for me. I used him for Calc II and III.
This thread gives me some hope, I thought I wanted to stop STEM altogether. I’m pretty good at alg, and want to get into Cornell. Personally, I definitely agree that in order to transfer time and dedication are key.
I had an eh 1+ semester to maintain a ~3 GPA for now, however, this thread definitely helped ease my anxiety.
I have to take 2 Pre-calc sequences over the summer (STEM major) and I have tutoring available to me; for those who are not math savvy – TAKE YOURSELF TO TUTORING.
@BotanyandMed 2 Pre-calc sequences? You mean you have to take pre calc 1 and 2 before you can take calculus 1?
@NASA2014 Pretty much, I’m a Biology major.
That would hypothetically boost my GPA up since at my college their 4 credits each. And the two sequences are easier to digest rather than taking all of them called Accelerated Pre-Calc (4 credit, SUPER FAST).
Thanks for asking! and I hope I’ve helped clear stuff up.
@BotanyandMed I got it! Thanks for the clarification. I believe you only need to take calculus 2 for the biology major. That is usually the requirement for every biology major in the USA. Have you taken the Biology and Chemistry sequence?
@NASA2014 I took my bios (considering retaking BIO I = C, BIO II = A/B [grades not in yet]). I get the option at my CC either to take Calc II (super hard, not as doable) or Biostatistics.
Taking Biostatistics (since in HS I’ve had stat and loved it)… Most of the schools I’m applying to have articulation agreements (but want a super high GPA ~3.5-3.7) and are Ivies.
I’m taking Chem in the Fall/Spring with Physics, sadly. But, I can do it!
Ohh that seems rough! You’ll do fine! What Physics will you be taking? Algebra-based or calc based?
@NASA2014 It’s nice to see someone who I can communicate here on CC~
Alg based, too late to do Calc based.
Just to give an update on where I am with math. I took college Algebra this past semester and got a B (atleast i didn’t need to take this course twice to get a B) but I had to withdrawl from trig due to personal issues getting me behind. Once I retake trig I will be ready to take calculus I finally.
@BotanyandMed can you tell me more of the courses you have taken?
@SuperGeo5999 Small steps make a great impact!
Just brush up on your alg and trig, and be strong!
@BotanyandMed that’s good how we encouraging each other.
@SuperGeo5999 Might as well, just apply yourself and stay ontop of that GPA. I know I will personally.
I retook Trigonometry over the summer and got a B. for this fall i am taking Calculus I, General Chemistry I, Introduction to engineering design, and Engineering software tools II. these are all courses i can take now because i took all my remedial math courses.
Congratulations! I hope you have another opportunity to take gen biology sometime in the future.
@BotanyandMed how is your semester going?
@SuperGeo5999 Doing enough lol, I hope you’re well.
