Hi. So to make a long story short, Intermediate Algebra has been the bane of my existence. I took it last semester and ended up withdrawing before I could fail and I am currently enrolled this semester as well. Once again, I am failing and at this point, it doesn’t look like I can manage to pass with a C. My first question is, should I just withdraw once again or take the D or F?
Failing twice has messed up the plan to transfer “on time” that I made for myself. Originally I was hopefully going to transfer into UCF to obtain a BSW for the Fall 2016 semester. For my own personal reasons, I was thinking about transferring to Valencia Community College from Palm Beach State College and earning the last of my credits there and then transferring to UCF. I’ve researched a little on my own about the process, but the only real concrete information I have is that I need to obtain 25% of my credits there in order to receive my AA degree from them. And from what I’ve checked, most, if not all of my credits should transfer just fine. So my last questions is, is this an easy process to go through? How would this look to UCF and other potential uni’s I would apply to? And are my chances of getting into UCF’s social work program shot with these withdraws on my transcript? I’d love to hear from anyone who’s gone through this process as well! Thank you.
I have no idea how the system works in non-California community colleges, but over here in order to transfer, you need to complete a quantitative math that has a prereq of Intermediate Algebra, meaning you have to take Intermediate Algebra if you want to transfer to a 4-year from a community college.
You may want to contact a counselor at UCF directly about this, or find the UCF board on this website and ask because it seems like a specific technical issue.
Also, personally, you might not be able to escape Intermediate Algebra. Have you done any tutoring for Intermediate Algebra? Taking this class, getting a bad grade, re-taking the class and getting a bad grade or getting a W, and then taking it again, may look bad to schools you’re trying to transfer to. Can you transfer without it?
Usually transferring between community colleges is easy. Make an appointment with the admissions office at the CC you are thinking of switching to, and go talk with them about it.
Why are you failing Algebra again? Are you attending all of the classes? Are you doing every single problem in every homework assignment? Are you working diligently with the Algebra tutors in the tutoring center? Are you visiting the instructor during office hours to ask about the things you don’t understand? If you’ve done all of that, and you still can’t get the grad you need to be able to transfer UCF on schedule, then you need to go meet with your advisor and discuss dropping Algebra now, and then taking it at a time when you can make more effective use of the resources you need to have in order to be successful in that class.
