Milton vs. Choate?

Lol, nice post.

St. Pauls' and Milton's matriculation is quite stunning. SPS had a nice well rounded matriculation. I think Milton sent 34 to Harvard which was cool.

Vowels ftw.

I would choose Choate, mostly because I dislike Milton's 50-50 boarding-day ratio. It would be difficult for me to live at a school where half of the people were going home every night, while I had to settle for phone calls...

Winterset--
I'm pretty sure Andover/Exeter have over 30%; Where'd you get your stats? I would like to look.

SoontoBoard: Winterset is right,,, It was from Prepreview

Okay, cool, thanks.

That brings up Milton's reputation in my mind then. Maybe I'll consider it more now. :)

Hm. Stupid Prepreview costing money. Does that, in your opinion, make them worse than the 5 mentioned?

I heard that the Milton campus is great, and that they have really great classes to choose from:)

I think somebody mentioned that their non-math department is really strong (english & the works), and their math department is basically just like any other school, because math is kind of hard to be really unique in.

But I haven't actually been there. I'm visiting on April 3rd.

Here's what this person named principalviola wrote about Milton:
Milton
Pros

* Campus
* Courses seemed better. Especially in the non-math departments. Math was pretty normal, I mean the courses were great but how much can Math stand out!
* Outdoor program
* Mountain program, seems so AMAZING
* Best college matriculation out of ALL boarding schools, competitive with Roxbury Latin
* Location
* "Dare to be True"

Cons

* 50/50 boarding
* Food
* Computer science department
* Vocational skills courses, they are useful

I don't find the 50/50 boarding to be that bad, because you can get closer to the non-boarders' families, as you can probably go and visit them while you're at boarding school. And also, Milton is a fairly big school, so there will be at least 400 boarders still there.

And if you go to Milton, I'll be there. Which is like a SUPERSUPERSUPER plus.
Hahah kiddding xD

^ Hey! I'm revisiting April 3rd too!

sweeeeeeeet:]
I'll be looking for you. In the most non-creepy yet creepy way possible.

LOL I SOUND LIKE A PEDOPHILE

xD

CHOATE! Of course I'm biased since my son goes there.

Both schools will have strong academics, great facilities and will give you an excellent education. My biggest concern about Milton would be the number of day students. I just think it changes the feel of a BS to have half the students go home at night. Also, I'd try to find out what weekends are like for boarding students. Does the place clear out and feel like a ghost town?

Honestly, go to the revisit days for each school. Talk to the kids. Try to imagine what it would be like living at either school for the next nine months.

And then go to Choate.:)

So, I'm a senior day student at Milton and lot of my friends are boarders so I can tell you that the majority of Milton kids really like the 50/50 ratio. We have an amazing activities program that runs stuff for boarders (and day students if they want) to do on the weekend, plus we are only 15 mins from Boston, plus boarders will have day student friends and have the chance to get off campus for a weekend if they feel like it. I know students at other boarding shcools (Deerfield, GDA etcc) that in literally in the middle of no where and, even though the whole school is on campus, there is only so much you can do together. Also, the dorms are a little smaller so each class is very tight with the other kids in their dorm so it feels a lot more like a family (there is also a TON of dorm pride stuff)

Also, SoontoBoard (I think it was you) made the comment earlier that it was wierd that we did not have any honors/AP English/History courses. This is because your "AP" level is our "normal" level. While our classes don't adhere to the normal AP curriculum (and therefore cannot be called an "AP") we are undoubtedly prepared to take the AP exams at the end of each year. This is why we have the best writing program of any private school. At the end of my junior year every student was prepared to take both the AP Language and the AP Literature exams even though techically we all took "regular" classes. It sounds to me like you are a little more concerned with stats and facts on paper than the students experiences. The reason Milton does not consider itself an AP oriented shcool is because the teachers value round table discussion and the students' interests over the AP curriculum's required readings.

Academically Milton is stronger. Prestige wise, Choate is more prestigeous.

I disagree with that...

Choate is just as strong academically, and Milton is as (if not more) prestigious than Choate.

I think both schools are severely underrated :P

I think Milton's a bit more prestigious than Choate, tbh. (well, I knew about Milton like, 2 months before ever hearing about Choate but maybe I'm just ignorant!)
And I'd say they're about equal academically (but Milton's a bit artsier, right?).

They are not severely underrated haha. The schools that are underrated are the good schools that don't get a WORD on CC... Saer had no problem choosing Choate over Exeter, and I have little problem choosing Milton over HADE(S is tied with Milton)

But yes, for the most part you are correct.

MILTON MILTON MILTON!
mainly because I got accepted there (:
BUT ALSO,
it has got amazing courses to choose from, a breath-taking campus and I don't really think the 50/50 boarding and day really affects you all that much.
I got waitlisted by Choate, but even if I got moved to the accepted list, I think I would still go to Milton.

OMG! We've got the same name!

@thingslost: who? me?

I got waitlisted at Choate and I still LOVE that school. I think they extremely kind because they wanted me so much that they went through the trouble to cause my school to change their policy on not giving recomendations! My friend's brother goes their and he says their arts concentration program is amazing, and that's the main reason they wanted me! Still, I have to say that Choate and Milton are good school academic wise. The only thing I would say really matters when choosing between the schools is which school makes you feel like you belong.

Almost everyone I talk to loves Choate. It is almost completely boarding, while milton, albeit a great school, does not have the greatest boarder-day student ratio. Just my thoughts on the two schools...

Could you please clarify what the 'greatest' boarder to day student ratio is, itsren?
