Minimalist packing for the over-packer

My dad had a multipocket vest. Lots of space, but oh vey sometimes it can be hard to remember which pocket has which item.

It’s actually great–no purse needed. No back pack. Just your jacket. And it looks exactly like any other jacket so style isn’t a problem. But it can be heavy.

Okay, I’ll admit I’m a geek. I love this stuff. I had a pair of pants once with zip off bottoms, a bunch of pockets which were really great. It was the style at the times. Perfect for travel–until going through the metal detector at the airport. I must’ve gone through 4 times because I couldn’t remember what was in what pocket.

I’d totally wear one of those vests! You can’t even tell they have multiple pockets!

In fact, because I used to wear a multi vest outdoors at work everyday (no way around it, stuff had to be accessible), I was that person wearing the geeky looking ones. I even have a “leisure” version that I’ve used for outdoor stuff when not at work. We were at Disney World one time when our girls were small, and we stopped to pull out a couple of water bottles from the back compartment. A young couple walked by and said “Hey, we’ll take one of those!” Probably wouldn’t have worn one themselves, but wanted to take advantage of me being a mule, lol.

I don’t think I could wear the vest - if only becaues I’m already usually wearing my warm vest, long sweater, scarf, large sun-hat (sorry fellow fliers), hiking boots, and neck pillow. I take the outwear off once seated (try not to disturb those around me and keep it in my seat). Wearing my bulky gear has helped avoid a checked bag multiple times.

Hysterical. I think I may have sat next to you a couple of times.

Has anyone heard that airlines are becoming stricter with their ‘personal item’ dimensions? I’ve heard back-packs are now being discouraged. I’ve usually carried a back-pack as my personal item (it does get a little puffy/heavy). Don’t want to get dinged with a $65 checked bag requirement (with the risk of the checked stuff being lost!) if bag is a tiny bit wider than the 18" x 14" x 8" (even though have traveled with that dimension backpack many times on Frontier)…

Edit to add: as I type this I realize I’m super risk adverse and will probably now just bring a large purse LOL.

Good question. My “personal item” is a backpack that fits under the seat in front of of me. It includes a very small purse (my normal one) and ipad and lots more. Hoping that is still OK.

I know - I’ve been traveling w/a backpack (mini purse inside) for a few years and have the routine down! My hub bought a little rolly suitcase that fits the dimesions for a personal item - but am thinking it looks like a carry-on and I might get flagged…?

<I overthink, overstress, overpack, and overdress for every flight LOL. Hence my interest in this thread!>

Your item needs to measure to the required dimensions. Most have a “bin” that you would put your item in to prove it’s okay. Some airlines are more forgiving than others. Some pay more attention to depth-- it has to easily fit under the seat so doesn’t hurt the seat it’s under. So 8 inches can’t go to 10 inches but maybe 17 inches length might go to 18.
