Is it bad to take the minimum credits during the year you take organic chemistry? Will med schools care?

it depends on what you mean by minimum. If you mean the fewest number of credits to keep you a full-time student, then yes that would be bad. If you mean taking a credit load typical of other students at your school rather than overloading, then no.

One or two semesters at 12 hours probably wouldn't be awful, but much more than that, it probably raises eyebrows...

If anything tack on some blow off class like History of Jazz or a PE course in scuba diving to get you up to 14 or so...

To emphasize what PSAS said:

At Duke, most students take the minimum number of courses (4 courses, or 16 credits). In that case, taking the minimum is not bad in the least.

However, I know many schools where the number varies widely and the average is probably much higher than the minimum.

The point is, you should pay attn. to the norm and adhere to that rather than the min. expected.

And you should, at least once or twice, go significantly above that.
