Minor/Classes in McIntire?

I'm hoping either to major in economics or business/finance(McIntire) at UVA next year, if I get in. I'm leaning more towards econ, though, because I'm not sure that an undergrad education purely in business is right for me. If I ended up deciding to major in economics, is it still possible to minor at McIntire, or at least take classes there? Also, is it possible to double major across McIntire and the College of Arts and Sciences? (I'm also considering government/foreign affairs.)

Thanks

Great question. I am interested in McIntire with foriegn affairs and/or possibly something in the new leadership school.

It's possible to double major, but it can be a LOT of work depending on your concentration in the Comm school. To my knowledge, you can't minor in the Comm school -- you have to be enrolled in it in order to take the classes there. There are a very select few, such as the Comm 180, 201, 202 classes that are not restricted to Comm students, all the rest of the classes are.

You can take a few classes in the Comm school, but it's not a big deal that you can't receive a minor from it. Every prestigious recruiter that comes here interviews a wide variety of majors, not just Comm schoolers. You should work on having a high GPA in a decent major, presenting yourself well and perhaps getting involved in a few business related ECs. If you're willing to take on a rigorous curriculum, major in math or physics and do well. The quantitative skills you'll acquire will make you more marketable than most Comm schoolers.

Besides business, what else can you not minor in?

If you're in the College, subjects in the other schools - Engineering, Architecture, Nursing, Education, etc.

So if you're a History major, you can only minor in something in the CAS, like Econ and English. That kinda sucks.

..and biology, physics, environmental sciences, all the sciences, anthropology, all sorts of foreign languages, media studies, women studies, all sorts of culture studies, political theory, sociology... etc. The schools exist because they've specialized in that field of study. If you like that field so much, transfer to that school. =)

I actually think Architecture does offer a minor to non-Architecture students.
