My daughter is thinking of doing this as a minor. Can someone tell me who usually does this minor? Is it mainly for someone who wants to be a nurse, a doctor or only a health administrator? My daughter is already premed, so is this minor necessary? Does it look good when applying to med school? Please help, any advice would be appreciated, thank you.
Besides GE, major, premed course reqs, your D will probably need to take additional courses to satisfy her school’s graduation reqs. If those additional courses come from this minor or from a broader range of subjects (eg art, history, lit, etc), that’s up to her. As college may be the last time for a long time to explore a wider range of subjects should she start med school, D may not want to limit herself. Does she need this minor? No. Does it look good when applying to med school? No. D’s major/minor are not important to med schools. What will be important to med schools is, in part, her GPAs in all her courses. I do not know what the minor consists of at your D’s school, maybe it has value if her med school plans fade and it helps as far as her plan B goes. What’s her plan B?
To directly answer your questions:
Not at all. Unless, as Jugulator suggested, it provides her with a viable Plan B.
Adcomms do not care what majors/minors applicants have so long as they have fulfilled all admission requirements.
It will be a non-factor. What she learns from the coursework might be helpful depending on what it is.
