Minor to go with Anthropology Major

Hi all. I'm set on being an anthropology major, but am unsure what minor would be most beneficial to me. I'm planning to either go to graduate school for Anthropology(not sure what kind) or go to medical school following graduation. Would it be best to minor in East Asian studies, chemistry, get a second major in archaeology(this would be no more work than a minor), or do something completely different. Any ideas?

Linguistics would be a very good minor to go with anthro, if you’re interested in linguistic anthro (I saw you posted about this in the grad school forum too).

If you get a minor, of course, there’s no rule that says it has to be related to your major. You can use it to explore an interest complete unrelated to your major.

Having said that, though, here are some suggestions for minors related to the interests and plans you stated:

  1. Anthropology major (going to grad school in Anthropology):
    a. Minors for a grad specialty in Biological Anthropology: Nutrition; Biology (esp. Genetics; Ecology & Evolution); Global Health; Human Development
    b. Minors for a grad specialty in Linguistic Anthropology: Linguistics; Psychology; Foreign Language
    c. Minors for a grad specialty in Archaeology: Chemistry; Language/Area Studies; Ancient Civilizations (e.g., Classical, Near Eastern)
    d. Minors for a grad specialty in Cultural Anthropology: Language/Area Studies; Urban Studies; Human Development; Global Health; International Studies; Folklore/Ethnomusicology

Anthropology major (going to med school)
Suggested Minors: History of Science/Medicine; Biology (esp. Genetics; Ecology & Evolution; Microbiology) Philosophy/Religion (Bioethics); Global Health; Chemistry; Nutrition; Health Policy (econ, sociology, & politics of health care); Statistics; Human Development

A lot depends, of course, on what options are available at your particular school.
