Minorities and Wealth at Vanderbilt

I am considering Vanderbilt and i wanted to inquire as to the presence of minorities on campus, and how the general interactions are amongst students. Also are Vanderbilt students very affluent. I am not poor but my parents make about 120K combined but I was wondering if the lifestyle of students is more flamboyant, in those regards?

There's this funny thing about being conservative and "wealthy"...

Usually you aren't flamboyant. Wealth is not nearly as important as class at places like Vanderbilt.

PS I just remembered that the women usually drive foreign cars as opposed to SUVs which I guess is flamboyant

Conservative and wealthy means that you get interviews at Vanderbilt (when they are not offered to everyone else) AND you get to be interviewed by daddy's best friend, both Vanderbilt alums!

I am conservative so that is a plus, unfortuantely no wealth :(!

OP, Vandy is large enough that there is room for all kinds of people. Yes, there are some who won't interact with those they deem unworthy. However, you will find plenty of people who will accept you for who you are ... they won't care whether or not your family has money, or if you are a different color/culture. Plus, there are lots of students who receive significant financial aid (so plenty are not wealthy). It makes me laugh to read about UMich's reputation ... rich, snobby students. I know many students at UMich, and none I know fit that description. It's the same at Vandy ... there are certainly wealthy snobs, but there are also students who are kind, caring individuals who will accept you for who you are.

We are fairly poor by Vandy standards but that hasn't caused our D any realy problems. She can't afford to spend like some of them do but she doesn't feel ostracized because of it. The wealth is astounding there but for the most part the kids don't rub anyone's nose in it.

vanderbilt students are very widely distributed by socioeconomic standards. many are wealthy, one i know is the son of the editor of a major financial magazine; but many are less affluent, i have to use a scholarship, and i can't afford a car on campus. this is not an issue.

minorities who exist at vanderbilt are primarily (in order of size): black, malaysian (they have a deal with the malaysian government that grants admission and tuition to a set number of malaysian students every year), indian, asian, and latino/a.

and whoever said that prospective don't get interviews is WRONG because it is on the website, if you can find an alumni, you can have an interview.

ding ding ding cowboy

winner winner chicken dinner!

I don't think being poor is an issue. Many people are at Vandy becaue the school gives out generous financial aid (implying many people here are not wealthy by any means)

diversity i think is a larger issue, but the amount of diversity here is growing by awesome strides (although it is still less than peer schools)
