Minorities at a White college

I just wonder... is life difficult for minorities at a WASP college?

I am going to a wasp college and they have a whole program for freshman minorities.

Also, I noticed a big difference between here and my "home" in Nigeria. In Nigeria my features are beautiful. In America, my features are so-so. I used to have a gap in my teeth -- something desired back home and avoided here. So I wonder how difficult would it be for a minority to date and socialize at a wasp school?

Also, I feel like I was accepted because I am a minority.

What do other suppose?

I suggest you stop referring to your college as a "WASP college" because it's a lil derogatory.

It's nice to meet a fellow Nigerian, though I was not born there, my parents came to America on student visas. I've spent my entire primary school years in private schools, which are predominantly Caucasian.

I have felt the stigma that is associated with being a "minority" in school, but it's more about how you perceive yourself. If you are a person with high self-esteem and know what you are capable of doing then you'll be fine; however, if you define yourself by how others perceive, such as Caucasian Americans, then you'll definitely have a problem being happy in your school.

You're going to your school to learn and your race shouldn't really be an issue.... one of my best friends (7 years) is Caucasian and I've had no problem being able to communicate with her about anything-including my culture, which she finds enjoys!

I think you'll be fine!!! Good luck!

stop thinking so much about differences

what is a wasp school.

well the OP goes to southern methodist

wiki "WASP"

WASP is supposed to mean White Anglo-Saxon Protestants, but I guess it's come to be a stereotype for upper-middle class, at least third generation Americans.

Don't worry about being a minority and there will be difference. The only thing that kind of bothers me about being a minority every now and then, actually, is being told that I act white...I am who I am, not because of a race that I am or that I'm not.
Also, you seem really nice and intelligent. I'm sure you'll find boys that will love you. And as for wondering why you got accepted...honestly, you'll never really know, you can guess, but you won't know...however, for whatever reason, you've been given a great opportunity for a good education, so take it and use it to your full potential.

I wanted to make this post when I got a letter about a minority program. I thought "Why is there a program for us? What is happening that my school feels I need extra protection or guidance?"

I know what you mean by "act white". I hate that, as well.

And yes, Niaja, I have been going to predominately white schools until I got to highschool where the majority is hispanic. XP

Thanks for replying.
