Minority Question: Is Portuguese considered Hispanic?

Is Portuguese considered Hispanic in college admissions?

No, it's not.

How have you aquired your answer?

How the US census defines hispanic. Just use a search engine to find the definition. Also use a search engine to find out how National Hispanic Scholars qualify.

hispanic ---- key is the word spanic. it is generally considered that to be hispanic, one's home country must speak spanish as it's predominant language. portuguese speak portuguese.

Realistically, no one tests you. If you're US born and you check "hispanic" then the admissions committee will look at you as Hispanic. If you're an international student and are from Portugal, you're looked at as an international student.

What if you are a US born Portuguese, living in Indonesia? -That is my current situation.

huh? portuguese is not hispanic lol.

hispanic as said before is ur country of origin is a spanish-speaking country. portugal is not a spanish-speaking country.

It's not that crazy of a question.

Portugal as well as some parts of Brazil speak portuguese.

I guess if you wanted to lump yourself into that category, you could.

It's not like they have, "White- Italian American" or "White- German American", etc, etc.

uh...i did not say spanic meant spanish speaking country. i just mentioned it to highlight the word spanic to indicate its relationship to SPAIN and SPANISH. Portuguese and spanish are incredibly different culturally and lingually. ask your relatives if they would be offended by being called hispanic...

but hey..if your one of them folks who considers an israeli an asian , than go ahead and call yourself spanish.

Obviously you do not understand the question, I will restate it for you in the best hopes that somehow you will understand.

Is Portuguese considered HISPANIC in COLLEGE ADMISSIONS?

I am not trying to start a debate with you, I am trying to obtain concrete facts.
Please do not post in this thread again.

No, Portuguese is not considered Hispanic in college admissions. But if you're that apprehensive about what everyone is saying on here, call all your prospective colleges. They do sometimes consider Brazilians to be Hispanic, after all. But taking into account that usually Spaniards aren't even considered Hispanic, I'd imagine Portuguese are never considered so.

...such is the state of affirmative action. It's really quite funny.

I'd put hispanic if it asks. If it asks Mexican/Latin American don't check yes, but if it asks "hispanic" by all means...

Personally I'm 100% against discrimination based on skin color, but to each their own. If they're going to give extra points to people based on skin shade, don't sell yourself short if you have that skin shade!

So Philipinos should select Asian as well as Pacific Islander? So Japanese should select Pacific Islander as well as Asian?

Come again...I would show the adcom that your proud of your Portuguese heritage. Your not a chicano, your not a hispanic....your a Portuguese.

See that selection that says Other: Please Specify?

Other: Please Specify: Portuguese

It doesn't ask if you're a chicano, and he is Hispanic. He won't get in trouble for it, and there's no shame in making a corrupt system look stupid(er). It's not even like he's lying. Why not use what he can legitimately use to his advantage to his advantage?

...and FYI - "Your" is possessive. You're looking for "You're"

"What if you are a US born Portuguese, living in Indonesia? -That is my current situation."

You are a white, nonHispanic student who has a very diverse background (living in Indonesia) that if handled well in essays could make you stand out in admissions.

You don't need to try to pass yourself off as Hispanic in order to stand out. Frankly, there are many Hispanics applying to college now. It's not that big a deal.

There probably aren't many Americans living in Indonesia who are applying to colleges. If you truly are living in Indonesia -- learning the language and culture -- not just living in an American bubble, you could stand out in admissions.

I apologize for my poor and rash use of the English language...but that is besides the point.

Your point of about them not asking for Chicano is invalid...
Most college apps (including the COMMON APP, the most comprehensive college application out there) have selections for not only Hispanic and Latino but Mexican American and Chicano as well. On top of that...they also have a selection that allows for self-inputed ethnic group selection.

I still do not see any better option than

Other: Please Specify: Portuguese.

It's a self-reported question. If you consider yourself Hispanic, then check Hispanic. If you consider yourself international, then apply as an international student. I know some people who are black and Puerto Rican but only check black. I know some people who are Brazilian (American born) and check Hispanic.
Either way, Northstarmom is right...sounds like you're diverse enough regardless of what you check.
