When is it appropriate to declare a minor at Cal? I was planning on minoring in math and was accepted to the CoC.

Generally you don’t declare a minor, you just finish all the courses needed for the minor and file a “completion of minor” afterwards.

So you can just take the classes needed for the minor in place of your electives?

Yes :)

Free electives though. I don’t know if the CoC breadth electives include math courses, but if they do, you can only overlap 2 upper-div courses between your major and minor. So you’ll just have to watch out for that but otherwise, go ahead and start planning.

In at least some minors, you can declare or apply to the minor after completing the lower division requirements for the minor. [Computer Science](The Computer Science Minor | EECS at UC Berkeley) is an example. Declaring the minor then gives you higher priority than other non Computer Science majors for getting into three upper division Computer Science courses (the number needed to complete the minor).

However, the [Math minor](http://math.berkeley.edu/undergraduate_minor.html) only allows declaring the minor during the semester when you are taking the courses that will complete the minor.
