- Can I declare a minor before I take any classes that fulfill it, or how does that work? 2) If I’m taking classes as electives, without a declared minor, that actually count for that minor, can I use those to fulfill minor requirements after I do declare? Or do I have to retake them because they don’t count before you’ve declared?
Good question :). Of course, the best answer will come from your college advisor. From my experience, Most universities allow you to declare a minor at any time. Classes you took before declaring and that meet the requirements of the minor, still count towards the minor. There may be some minor classes that require you to declare the minor and/or receive permission prior to taking (i.e upper division courses, or reqd courses for popular majors). Please note that in most cases Minors are optional…i.e My daughter’s Health Science Admin Major does not require a minor although she has chosen to minor in business administration anyways.
@4MyKidz thanks for the help! I’m thinking of having a minor instead of a double major; it’ll make it easier to possibly pursue that subject at the grad school level. Before officially declaring a minor, I wanted to take a couple elective classes in two different areas to explore my career interests, because the minors would help narrow down my broader major choice. (:
Good idea @socalkid1 ! It’s good you are thinking about this ahead of time. It can get a little expensive, but if you can afford to take the classes & they count towards electives, go for it!
