Mirrorless camera recs

Does anyone have a mirrorless camera that they love? I have an old Canon 40D DSLR and an Olympus E-M10 mirrorless. I think I want a different mirrorless with a good zoom lens. Right now I’m mainly using it for birding and other wildlife sightings. lol Thanks.

My daughter has been using a Nikon DSLR and needs a new camera. @groundhog74 do you prefer the mirrorless to the DSCR? I know they have improved over the years.

Do you have a zoom lens with your Canon DSLR that you can use with a Canon mirrorless?

My daughter is a photographer and works professionally. Everyone with whom she works has transitioned to mirrorless. When she first transitioned from her Canon DSLR to mirrorless, she bought an adapter that allowed her to use her DSLR lenses in her mirrorless body until she could replace her old lenses.

Yes, they are much lighter. I just want one that can support a bigger zoom lens.

Do you know which Canon mirrorless she has?

If you already have a number of Micro 4/3 lenses, then I’d give strong consideration to stay with an Olympus (now OM) or a Panasonic. If you’re looking for an upgrade on your camera, or a bigger body to go for a bigger lens, then I’d consider an EM-5 or EM-1.

I’m also an EM-10 owner (1st gen), but I don’t think I’d ever go bigger than then EM-5 because that’s one of the things that drew me to mirrorless cameras (small size & weight). But if you want more heft, then there are other bodies that could work for you.

She has an R6 because it was the best she could afford two years ago when she was upgrading.

The title is going to seem weird, but here is a podcast that I found to be useful. The interviewer is ostensibly talking about pet photography, but it is not really mentioned or relevant to the interesting part. The person being interviewed is the owner of YM Camera, whose staff has been incredibly helpful to my daughter as she starts out. He talks about DSLR vs mirrorless. I listened to it a couple of months ago. If I correctly recall, he discusses the timing of new releases of mirrorless models, which may help in deciding if you should buy now or wait.

I am in no way affiliated with the store, but they have a website and ship worldwide. If you send a message via their website, it goes directly to Robby’s cell and he answers quickly. My daughter no longer lives nearby, but she has called them to talk through upgrading a lens, they have quoted her trade in on her old lens over the phone, etc., so calling and talking to Robby can be informative if you don’t have a local camera store that you trust.

I accidentally bought her the wrong lens for Christmas once. I realized a couple of days before, and they were great about trading it for the correct one even though it was outside of their return policy.

We got my daughter a Sony mirrorless and she loves it. We went with the midline model at the time. She went over to South East Asia and had wonderful pictures. Best buy had them at the time but really any major brand seem to have them now.

I am on the market for one for my daughter. I was planning on a Sony 7ii but after some more research landed on the Canon RP with the 24-105 lens.

I have an Olympus OMD EM1 Mark 2. I like the versatility of the MFT system and that I can buy both Zuiko (Olympus) and Lumix lenses. The Zuiko 300 mm f4 was on my wishlist when DD was playing soccer. The newer OM (Olympus) system bodies are quite nice. I might upgrade to the OM1 soon. Bodies are essentially disposable now-a-days, so focus on the glass.

I have a canon R6. (And an R7 backup body). And a variety of lenses…. Everything from the

  • 15-35 2.8 (northern lights/Astro) to the
  • 24-105 to the
  • 24-240 (great all purpose lens but not terribly fast) to the
  • 70-200 2.8 (great sports) to the
  • 100-400 (good zoom if not low light) to the
  • 100-500 (great zoom for animals).

I’ve gradually swapped all my lenses to mirrorless R mount. I wanted the benefit of lighter since I’ve been doing traveling. Only downside is that you can’t put a teleconverter on the 70-200 2.8.

I was just with someone who got the 600 f4 lens (a $12k lens). Damn it’s big, but wow! If I go to Yellowstone next winter, I might rent it…

Why is the R7 a backup for the R6? Just trying to understand the difference between them.

The R7 is a crop sensor and the R6 is a full-frame camera. The sensor is better in the R6. I thought about an R8 (full frame) for the backup, but it doesn’t have in-camera stabilization, so I decided to go with the R7.

Being an empty nester, I’ve been taking some photo trips and if my primary body (R6) dies in me in the middle of a trip (in the middle of nowhere), I would be sad.

I’ve also been in some cold (Arctic circle of Alaska in February), so I put two different lenses on each camera rather than swapping out lenses if I want a different shot.

I have a Canon DSLR and have to say that the 24-105 L lens is the perfect general-purpose “walking around” lens I’ve owned. Just enough wide angle for many things and just enough telephoto for many things as well.

Agreed! I favor my 24-70 for that 2.8 but miss the extra length sometimes. A 24-105 f2.8 would be the dream!

The Sony 7iii appears to edge out the Canon RP but she couldn’t play with my very large Canon lens collection (which will require an adapter) and I am not convinced the increased $$ is worth it. I’ll have to make a call today. The main advantage with Sony is in body IS - so you pay a little more upfront but get to save a little on the lenses.

The Canon R5/R6 have in camera stabilization…

unfortunately my 24-105 is not a 2.8. wish it was!!!

Too $$$ - a first real camera for my 15yo.

Do you have it? Are you happy with Canon mirrorless?

I love it.

Fair point too $$$ for a teen ◡̈

Is there a camera store (a real one!) near you? The one near me often has excellent used equipment at a fair price. Maybe a micro 4/3rds that someone turned in?

I just sold back my 7D mark ii and related lenses and got some of the new lenses listed above. The lens I got the most from was the 70-200 2.8 (EF mount)…

DM me and I can recommend an excellent camera store. They have an online presence, but I would give you a specific name of one of the guys that works there. I’ve worked with him for 5 years now and I feel like he gives me a good balance of what I am looking for while staying within my price range.
