misbooked flight, arriving one day before housing opens... suggestions?

so i somehow stupidly booked my flight to arrive on the night of the 28th instead of the 29, and i dont have anywhere to stay. I called NYU housing offices and they said there is absolutely no way i can move in early, so I don't think there's really any other option except to bite my lips on the extra expenses and stay in a hotel/motel. any suggestions?

sleep on the sidewalk

well…would the flight change fee be < or > than the cost of a motel/hotel? if the answer is greater than, you can book a motel/hotel near the airport you are flying into to save $$ (there are courtyard/fairfield inns near all three major NY airports)

Book a Hotel or change your flight, duhh.

i was more wondering whether someone could suggest a good hotel, since on the whole CC has been so knowledgeable and helpful. No need to be so rude…

you could have implied that in your original post.

anyway, i could just check tripadvisor and look for hotels in Manhattan. the area around NYU will be pricey, especially because it’s around Move-In. you could also try Pricelining something. good luck.

do you want to stay at Newark, JFK or LaGuardia? staying in NYC is going to be your priciest option…

There is a small serviceable hotel called the Union Square Inn. Close and less costly but rooms are small. No elevator so try for lower floor. D stayed there in Jan when she went for Tisch audition and is booked there the 28th. She said it was plain but clean and she felt safe. Lots of close places to eat etc.

Union Square Inn no longer has availability. I think the hordes of people coming in for NYU Move-In, especially around the NYU area is making it difficult to find hotels near NYU without paying top dollars. It seems like hotels in the lower to mid Manhattan area are priced at least in the mid to high $200s before taxes for 8/28 check in.

dreamormoney, I think you are in a dilemma in terms of cost. The hotels nearer the airport would be cheaper, as mentioned before, e.g., the Fairfield Inn chain/ Marriott Courtyard near LaQuardia. They have shuttle buses from the airport and then you would have to pay for a taxi ride into NYC the next day (which you would have to do anyway even if arriving 8/29). Of course, this was only an example. You would look at options near whichever airport you will fly into, JFK, Newark, Laquardia. Unless your family will be driving in with you?

By the way, I pm’ed you. GL!

I prefer the Waldorf Astoria.

It will probably be cheaper to change your flight date than get a hotel in the city during the week prior to school start. Check out hotel rates and make a decision afterward

Email your RA.
Maybe they have a floor you can crash on.
If you are coming alone, that is.

Try checking your school’s website. Often there are suggestions on the page, usually in the admissions section for people who are coming to check the school out. If it’s good enough for prospective student’s it’s good enough for an incoming student!

@XU

the problem is that i’m pretty sure every other NYC college also has move-in week at the same time. at NYU alone, FIVE THOUSAND freshmen will be descending upon the NYU campus, any hotel near campus is probably booked up.

I think you should also change your flight. Hotels can be really annoying to book especially in NYC. Cheap hotels itself is an oxymoron. A night might cost you upwards of 150+, then you have to worry about location and carrying all of your luggage in and out…busboys are really only at exclusive hotels.

Try a hostel

I second the hostel idea, if you are coming by yourself. The RA’s will more than likely be hesitant about letting you stay in their rooms. This is going to sound bold, but, what about hanging out at the airport…overnight. It will not be ideal, but will be cheaper. I am assuming that you are flying in the night before move in (I am skipping welcome week, so have no clue when move in day is). If you fly in the night before, hang out at the airport (hopefully LaGuardia–they have lots of restaurants, shops, etc). Go inside one of the shops there and use your laptop for a few hours, watch a movie on it, etc. Spring for the internet, which should only be a few bucks, and get to NYU bright and early the next morning.

Such a dialog (OP = original post, RP = rude post):

OP: “… and stay in a hotel/motel. any suggestions?”

RP: “sleep on the sidewalk”

RP: “Book a Hotel or change your flight, duhh.”

OP: “i was more wondering whether someone could suggest a good hotel …”

RP: “you could have implied that in your original post.”

Given the choice between rude and polite, some automatically choose rude. :frowning: There’s an “ignore” feature on CC that works well when you see a pattern. Thanks to others for helpful suggestions. :)

If the OP is coming with a lot of luggage, I don’t think a hostel would be a great choice. A lot of them are ‘dormitory’ style, or incredibly small rooms.
