alright, good news is I was accepted to NYU!!!! my dream school.....

Bad news... it doesn't look like we'll be able to visit. I have not actually been to NYU yet, and I've heard over and over again that it is imperative that you visit before you enroll to ensure that NYU is really "right for you". I don't think that we are going to be able to go because plane tickets are so expensive right now. Plus, add that onto the cost of staying in a hotel in the city for at least two nights.

So in an effort to try and cut costs, can anyone recommend a cheap place to stay? I have heard that Queens is a good place. Also, does NYU offer "open dorms"? Meaning, can we stay in an open dorm for the weekend?

Thanks so much!!!!

P.S. Is there any websites that have student opinions of NYU and websites with pictures of NYU?

You can always live in New Jersey and commute in, but I don't recommend it. The commute's too complicated for someone who's not familiar with NYC. Look in Brooklyn/Queens/North Bronx/Westchester, although Westchester's expensive as all hell and you might as well stay in a dorm. You CAN get a low cost room at NYU for like $8k with meal plan or something....otherwise try getting a sublet in Westchester or Queens near a train/subway. If you get lucky you might score one for $600....after commuting costs it really comes out in a wash though.

i graduated nyu 10 years ago and i definitely think you should visit before deciding. nyu is a huge school with thousands of students spread out throughout the city. it is a very urban atmosphere so you have to make sure that's for you. also, depending on what school/major you choose, classes can be huge. i grew up in brooklyn so it wasn't the right choice for me- i would have liked a smaller school in a more suburban or even rural environment since i grew up in the city.

and you can absoloutely stay in one of the outer boroughs- brooklyn or queens or even long island if you decide to visit nyu. nyu is very accessible by subway from anywhere in the city.

Honestly, my visit gave me no indication of what the school year was going to be like. When I visited I was definitely enchanted by NYC and had a much romanticized view of it...and my perspective has changed entirely. I think visiting and living are two completely different things.
Although I do think it is important to see NYC and have an idea of what you are getting yourself into.

Try Craigs list on line. People are always renting apartments for a weekend when they go away. I recomend checking with a new yorker first to make sure you are in a good area.

i would be very careful about finding a place to stay on craigs list if you're not familiar w/ NYC. Call NYU and see if they can connect you with a student who would let you stay in the dorms with them. You definitely should visit first. This is a big and sometimes overwhelming city.

About the dorms and pictures... there's a wikispace with some great tantalizing pics (for those of us who haven't been accepted, or yet).... i don't know it, maybe someone else does?

I don't have any personal experience with this, but my "Bottom Line" newsletter had a blurb I read today about a place with DVD tours of more than 350 college in the US, Canada, and Europe. Says the DVDs are recordings of student tours, not promotional videos, "so you see a more intimate glimpse of the campus." Each one is between one and two hours. $21 for one school, and $15 for additional.....Collegiate Choice 201-871-0098, www.collegiatechoice.com. That said, I think you should make every effort to try to go visit before you commit. Good Luck!!!

mine was neutral. I have a real long thread i started called "please read some things i need to clear up" back a page or two that gives a long description of my feelings of nyu if you want to check it out.

You could stay in a hostel! They are supersuper cheap and if you find a cool one, you could also have a pretty far out experience. I'd say, really research- wherever you end up staying.
