Hey guys so I am just looking for some comfort with my situation.
As an ambitious student from Florida I ended up getting rejected or waitlisted to evey college I applied to except for one.
Accepted: UGA
Rejected: UF, Georgia Tech, Tulane
Waitlisted: Emory and NYU
I wanted to go to UF where all of my friends are going however I got rejected and now I am entering into UGA where it was a bit of backup for me but now I am going to be all by myself in a place where I am not too excited about going to. I am just upset and afraid of being alone. On top of that I am paying OOS tuition which makes things even more burdening. I wanted to apply to UCF or USF however I have very egocentric parents who refuse to have me go there.
Anyone out there willing to talk me out through this?
I’m surprised an in-state FL student was rejected from UF but waitlisted at Emory and NYU (which are both very competitive); you can always transfer from UGA to UF after first or second semester, or you can take a few classes at a community college this fall and transfer into UF that way.
I saw where you listed your Family Income of less than $60K/yr. Is this correct and how would your parents afford an UGA COA of close to of $43K? Would they be able to afford NYU or Emory?
Have you thought about the Sante Fe College (Gainesville) Option and then transfer to UF Engineering?
I think you can apply to UCF up to May 1st for Fall 2015 and June 1, 2015 for USF.
@Psata82 ahh yes that’s correct. It’s an interesting negotiation I had with my parents. We have a series of assets that could be sold in order to afford NYU or Emory however my parents would not tap into it unless the college I attend is “in their standards” which I deem quiet ridiculous.
@preamble1776 yeah most of my friends were shocked that I got turned down by UF but hey anything can happen. Most of my college admissions are running around my family’s ego and they refuse to send me to community college.
@Psata82 yeah I really liked USF! I met the requirements for the honors college and I liked to community of the honors college. On top of that the education quality is excellent.
Maybe you should try some more negotiating with your parents to go to USF, since it sounds like you would be much more happy there. Surely your happiness enters into their equation for consideration.
@movemetoo I am trying but hopefully they are moved because I am running out of time. I have to make a commitment deposit to UGA by May 1st.
But my question to you all is how can I feel optimistic about going to UGA although I am going be separated from my friends and I am going to be alone in somewhere where I am not the most excited about being there. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t hate UGA, I have great profound respect for the school and the program I have been accepted into (biochemistry, their biological science program is pretty elite). I am just not happy about my current situation.
@Yoshi24, if you really like USF you SHOULD go ahead and apply. I do not see what UGA has over either UCF or USF. You can always go to UF or higher rated Biomedical Engineering programs after completing your undergrad at USF or UCF.
Do you have any AP and/or Dual Enrollment Credits…Total? I rarely see a parent forcing a student to go the more expensive route. It is normally the other way around.
@Psata82 I am going to have completed 12 AP classses by the time I graduate but I am going to have only about 10 credits out of it (I didn’t pass one last year and not expecting to pass one this year). I do feel UGA will prepare me for med school much better compared to USF although USF has that 7 year med school program.
My ultimate goal is to go to med school, my dream is UChicago for med school but let me stop getting ahead of myself since I am just graduating high school haha. Anyways I want to major in biomedical engineering so I can have a solid career in a field I am interested in just in case if I am not capable of going to med school whether it’s for financial or academic reasons.
Yeah I know it boggles my mind of what I am going through. It’s funny how I am trying to maintain my parent’s finance while my parents are trying to push me into something that they know they can’t afford unless they give up some assets. However I am going to work in college and I have collected some scholarship money so everything isn’t that bad.
It doesn’t matter where you go to college if you plan on med school.
But that’s weird about UF. Did you try appealing the rejection? Or calling and asking why you were rejected? Sometimes, and this is very rare, there’ll be some clerical error that results in a rejection.
@Vctory I appealed my decision and I did call their admissions office however they were not allowed to disclose the reasoning behind my decision. They just told me, “they didn’t have space for me.” My appeal decision is to arrive at any time however I am not optimistic about my chances since the acceptance rate off an appeal is like around 5-10%.
I’ll address your concern about not being with your high school friends. Most students enter college not knowing anyone else in the freshman class. With everyone in the same boat and looking to make connections, finding new friends will not be a daunting task, unless you are exceptionally shy or socially awkward. And often, students who expect to remain friendly with high school buddies in college find that their interests diverge and they tend to grow apart anyway as they mature and fit into new social circles. It’ll be fine, really.
I think that USF has pretty strong health science programs, and Florida is a great state for internships and research opportunities in the field on account of its senior population and the huge health care industry in the state.
Also, don’t go in deciding you will be miserable, because then you will be. As other said, most freshman don’t know anyone and that is why colleges have freshman orientation and mixers and dorm activities so you can meet people.
All of my high school friends went to Ball State when I went to Purdue. I made my new friends, and I feel like a lot of times people who come to college with a high school friend group don’t branch out and meet new people. So don’t let the no friends thing stop you from attending UGA if you like/can afford it.
