Misogyny

Until a few moments ago, I honestly (naively) believed the we had finally achieved equality of the sexes. I looked forward to entering a world which welcomed women into the professions, universities, and society in general without regard to her sex/gender. So, I was naturally startled to come across the thread "Female Foray" in the College Life forum in which a male college student proceeds to rant about the successes of women in today's world and how it is keeping men down. I was even more shocked to see how many posters (I presume male) agreed. This is not the first thread I have come across on CC that exhibits blatant misogyny either. I feel compelled to say something...this post is long overdue.

So, maybe I have just been living in a bubble for the past seventeen years...a progressive pocket of the world where prejudice, if it exists, is at least dead and buried, a thing of the past.

Misogyny is just as reprehensible as racism and destructive as bigotry. And it cannot be changed through the law. It is a product of backwards attitudes and insecurities, all of which take time and energy to correct.

I guess I am just frustrated.

You've never met people like that before in real life? Where do you live???? I'm a woman and I have met people like that. I don't really care though. I'm not going into the sciences so I won't have to deal with it TOO much when I get older. Of course misogyny exists everywhere but in some careers you can avoid it.

Truth be told, however, I am NOT looking forward to the inevitable career-children quandary. Thankfully I have a couple years until I have to deal with that. :D

Not really. It surprised me...and I do care.
