Miss Porter's sex scandal

I was doing some online research and found this article dated January 2014. I realize teacher-student sex could happen anywhere, but it is very unsettling to hear of it at a girl's school, where you sort of assume the female students are safe.

<a href="http://articles.courant.com/2014-01-07/news/hc-miss-porters-teacher-prison-0108-20140107_1_joseph-prem-rajkumar-second-degree-sexual-assault-former-miss-porter">http://articles.courant.com/2014-01-07/news/hc-miss-porters-teacher-prison-0108-20140107_1_joseph-prem-rajkumar-second-degree-sexual-assault-former-miss-porter</a></p>

There have certainly been incidents of sexual abuse at boys’ schools as well.
Maybe it’s because I have a number of relatives in law enforcement, but… My feeling is that there is no place that is 100 percent safe all the time. That’s why it’s so important to have frank discussions with our kids about these issues and advise them on how to keep themselves as safe as possible. I have been told that when this incident was first reported, Porter’s did a good job of talking about it and handling the trauma within their community.

I know that there was a student-teacher relationship at a co-ed prep a few years ago, but I believe it was a PG student who was 18 and a young (single) teacher, which is still unethical, but not quite as creepy.

I hope that every parent here makes sure to have a frank discussion with their teen about boundaries and when to report behavior that seems questionable.

I don’t think teacher-student relationships are unethical as long as they’re similar in age. I had several teachers who married their students but they were only several year apart. It’s quite common to see teachers marrying their students.

We aren’t talking about college students and their TA. Or grad students and their professors. We are talking about high school students in a boarding school environment.

This is all too depressing. :frowning:

Well, I went to a upper-middle income public school and I believe several of my teachers married their senior students when the teachers were in their first or second year of teaching. Married several years after student finished college, of course.
