Hey guys. I just realized I made a huge mistake while choosing majors for Davis. I originally chose Economics, which does not require the computer science requirement as Managerial Econ does. But while discussing my intentions with my counselor, she advised me to choose managerial econ. Without her telling me or looking it up myself, I did not realize I was missing the computer science requirement. Now on my UC application, I am a mangerial econ major missing an assist perquisite with no intention of completing it next semester. I have already chosen my classes and I have 17 units so I can not fit it in my schedule. How much of an impact will this have on an acceptance and what should I do? I do know some people who were missing a prerequisite and still got accepted. I do plan on calling the admissions tomorrow ( I am just freaking out right now).
If it is required, you should attempt to take 20 units, or eliminate another course.
@lindyk8 Idk if I can do that due to the complication and limitations of the class schedules. Is it possible to switch the major to econ? My alternative major is econ.
You can’t change majors once submitted. Whether they decide to consider the alternate is their determination, but if you are a competitive student, I’m assuming there is a higher likelihood.
@lindyk8 I currently have a 3.6+ gpa. I am going to contact them tomorrow morning but I can’t believe I let that mistake happen. I know a few friends who got into Davis and was able to take their missing prerequisite at Davis so I am hoping that’s the same case as me.
Good luck. Let us know!
I will be missing a pre-req (calc 2) before transferring as well. But my TAG got approved without it. Davis is pretty lenient towards pre-reqs as far as I know. So I would not worry too much… but let us know
My experience has been that Davis is not especially lenient, but that’s neither here nor there.
If the course is required it may invalidate your TAG. I’m not sure how much the TAG committee evaluates major requirements. I’m not sure they really do it at all. They have a lot of caveats up there re major requirements.
UPDATE: I looked at your major on assist. While it says all courses must be taken for a letter grade I did not see the word REQUIRED anywhere, which is usually what they put up when they mean business. It was confusing because the assist I was looking at seem to also include an agricultural major, but there were a lot of pre-requisite courses. I think, based on sheer number of pre-requisites, and required not being mentioned, you’re – maybe, perhaps, I’m guessing, who knows? – set for the major.
But I know it will still be a nail biter until April.
@lindyk8 @sliceoflife24 So I called this morning and the advisor or whoever answered told me that the computer science requirement is not actually “required” and that I am okay even though assist states that all the prerequisites must be taken. Therefore, not taking the computer science class with no intentions of finishing it by spring won’t affect my chances of admission.
That was a relief to hear. It makes me want to call again to confirm because I can’t believe it.
@lindyk8 You do have a point that it does not state REQUIRED but it does mention somewhere on the page that all the perquisites must be taken. Thanks for your insight and help!
So glad it worked out. Yeah, as I always tell ppl about the process, the rules to apply as a transfer are pretty straight-forward. But the tiny details can be overwhelming and disconcerting.
