Hello, I have a dilemma I am working on. I am a freshman at Case Western Reserve University. This coming spring I have the opportunity to go to South Africa for 2 weeks. The first week is over spring break, however the second would cause me to miss a week of class.
Obviously I would love to go, but I don’t know if a week is too much to miss. I have not registered for second semester yet so I don’t know exactly what I’d be missing. I’m worried I’d miss a test, although I would imagine that the tests would be before spring break.
Thank you in advance to any advice
I think it depends on you - how good of a student are you? Will you be able to buckle down and study on the return with focus and commitment to catch up? I have a now sophomore who missed a week out of fall and spring each semester due to illness/hospitalization. He was able to get caught up, but he is a very strong student with an incredible work ethic. Even when he wasn’t 100% healthy he was able to get back into it.
Best of luck to you!
Is this some kind of educational opportunity?
If just for fun, then no, don’t do it.
If it is educational, then talk to your professors at the beginnng of the semester and ask how you can plan around that.
Then do all your reading and HW and papers ahead of time.
You may have tests before and after spring break.
A lot depends on how your school works. At my daughter’s school, many professors have strict attendance rules or class participation grades or clicker points. Missing a week of classes could negatively impact her grades.
It can be hard to catch up if you have course that are reading intensive. If you are a strong student who is always up to date on your work and are will to work over your trip then you might be able to pull it off.
