Missing Financial Information Needed

Hello, today I received my financial aid package from the school in which I’ll be attending this fall to accept or deny, but added was an e-mail stating that they required information that was missing from my FAFSA.

Now, I will be 24-years old come the fall semester, so when I filled out my FAFSA they marked me as an independent student. Marking me as an independent student, they did not require me to fill out my parents tax information. Now, even though I’m 24, I’ve never worked or filed my tax returns, so I simply stated that I didn’t file, and I moved onto the next part of the FAFSA.

My school is now asking me to fill out a Verification form and to send in my 2014 Student Tax Transcripts, though I have no idea how I would go about in getting these tax transcripts that the school is asking for. I tried getting the tax transcripts both online, through the mail and over the phone, but to no avail. Would there even be any transcripts available for me since I’ve never worked or filed?

Any help or advice on this issue would be much appreciated.

A tax return transcript is unavailable if you did not file taxes. Your school likely has a Non-Filer’s statement that you will need to complete indicating that you did not work or file taxes. It sometimes will be linked as a document through your student portal or found through your school’s website under the Financial Aid section. Contact your school’s financial aid office and ask what you need to do to indicate that you did not file to complete the verification process. Keep in mind that they will want to know how you supported yourself financially without working, so be prepared to explain your situation (ex. parental support, government benefit)

Thanks for the reply, kgos16. The Verification Form that I have to fill out has a section for Tax Return Non-Filers, but it asks that you submit a ‘2014 IRS Verification of Non-Filing’, which in order to get you must go through the ‘Get My Transcripts’ on the IRS’ website. I can’t get through the ‘Get My Transcripts’ on the IRS’ website to obtain the ‘2014 IRS Verification of Non-Filing’ because like you said, there are no transcripts because I’ve never filed.

I’ve contacted the school about my situation and hopefully this can be resolved soon.

I am not an expert on this but some thoughts.

Are you able to create an account and sign in?

If you can’t get the statement online you may have to print this, check box 7 and mail in. Not the forms says it is only available after June 15
