Missing my first day of class?

So, I was supposed to have my first class on Monday, but I have mandatory training for a new job. This is the only time I can do the training, or not have the job. So I've decided to miss the first day of class, (it's only one class), to go to the training. Should I e-mail my professor about it? I'm not sure what to say in the e-mail.

Well that’s better than my story. I missed my first day due to breaking my ankle. I ended up getting a scooter for the month :D

Your professor won’t really care that you weren’t at class (in the way that some high school teachers might be peeved, or coaches for instant), but they will probably point you to an online syllabus or perhaps the reading/assignment for the next class.

You should probably tell the professor, or the TA, or someone. At my college, if you’re not there for the first day in certain classes, you can’t take the course. You should make sure this isn’t one of those cases, or, if it is, ask if they can make an exception for you.

If you e-mail the professor, you can tell him/her exactly what you told us: that you have mandatory job training that can’t be done any other time and that you can’t have the job without. Just be honest and polite, and show enthusiasm for the course so the professor knows you aren’t just trying to blow them off.

At my school you get dropped from the course if you miss the first lecture. It might be worth it to shoot them an email.

^^ What TwistedxKiss said, plus make sure the prof knows this won’t be a weekly thing, that it’s a one time deal that you need to miss class.
