Misspelling on College Application

Well, unfortunately, my daughter misspelled a book title in one of her college applications...now that she realizes this, what if anything can be done to possibly rectify this? It has already traveled through cyberspace and the college sent an email verifying receipt of her application. She is extremely upset because this is not typical of her. She feels as though she is doomed. The application passed through multiple hands including her high school's college office...luckily it was a single application and not the common app because that went out to six schools. It is second on her list of potential colleges for which she is applying. Any advice for the weary? Yes, she has lost sleep over this. Thanks!

Most probably no one will notice. If they do, it will probably matter very little, if at all.

This is nothing. My D asked for meanning of very common word when she was presented with question that she did not understand during interview to very selective program that had only 10 spots for incoming freshmen. Guess where she is now? Yep, one of those 10 spots was offerred to her. My reaction to her mentionning about this interview was: Forget about this one. I was wrong!

Your D will be just fine and should not worry about anything at this point any way.

show this to your D - it will help her sleep better

Don’t do a thing!! She will appear crazed - which she may be a this point but really, it is fine. You should see the typos D found long after the apps were in! It did not affect her results in the least. In fact, I’m sure you’ll find more as time goes by if you choose to re-read them.

agree the clam fart thread will make her and you feel better but no one should read it while drinking anything because you will undoubtedly spray your keyboard and monitor with whatever liquid you are consuming at the time. It is hysterically funny!

Tell your daughter not to worry about it. Even the most meticulous adults make spelling errors occasionally, and admissions reps understand that proof-reading skills decline when emotions are high and when the same material is being repeatedly scanned. It is unlikely to affect her application at all. If a string of spelling errors reaches 5 or 6 in a short essay, then it starts to look like a problem–but one? Forget it!
