Hi Everyone,
Silly question! I already submitted my Yale SCEA application but was looking through it earlier today when I noticed a misspelling. I spelled “world-renowned” as “world-reknowned”. Will this affect my chances of admission? It’s the only spelling error in my application. Thanks!
No. If Yale rejected every application with a typo, it could not fill the seats, IMO.
It depends. Did your essay tell them you were excited about applying to YEAL?
I think Yale would be well served to consider your spelling error a serious flaw. It highlights your carelessness and lack of effort towards preparing a quality product. It also highlights your haste in accomplishing tasks and failure to perform a proper review. If you care so little to proofread your essay then why should Yale consider your application on the same level as someone who did proofread their essay?
Are essays with spelling errors worthy of an Ivy league? I doubt it.
On the bright side, Yale will look at your application as a whole and make a decision.
Good luck.
I actually like that misspelling. But if you missed “Yale” as “Harvard” then they will make sure you will attend Harvard.
My silly answer.
Oops! My answer already has a misspelling.
@MassDaD68
While I’m grateful for the input, I don’t appreciate the condescending tone and negative assumptions (the comment about how little I must care was completely unnecessary). I put a significant amount of time and thought into my essays and had several people (including teachers) proofread them; sometimes errors are missed. Despite the single flaw, I’m extraordinarily proud of my Yale app.
More to the point, Yale accepted me (almost three months ago now, I might add), so I guess @skieurope 's hypothesis was right. I understand that you’re just sharing your opinion, but I would greatly appreciate it if you did so in a more courteous manner next time. You do not decide whether or not a particular application is Ivy-worthy or not. I’m sorry if this is a bit blunt, but I don’t believe your message was indicative of the behavior and values encouraged among those in the CC community. Have a nice day.
Congrats on your acceptance, @RoundGenius!
MassDaD68: Chill. Your O.C.D. and fancy for online berating is out of line. There was little if nothing constructive in your comment. It was neither instructive nor an act of tough-love. I don’t believe in coddling students or protecting their feelings from honest constructive criticism. But you made unqualified judgements as to the effort RoundGenius may or may not have invested in the essay. Arachnids eat their own. No need for you to do the same.
