Mistakenly sent acceptance letter?? Anyone else?

Yesterday I was thrilled to receive my acceptance from Goucher only to be checking my email this afternoon and recieve this:

Dear ______,

Late last week, Goucher’s Office of Financial Aid mistakenly mailed to you a letter congratulating you on your admission. This letter was sent to you in error as we have not yet made a decision on your application for admission. I am embarrassed to be sending this email message to you, and I sincerely apologize for our miscommunication.

Your application for admission is complete and our Admissions Committee will soon be reviewing your credentials. We plan to begin notifying applicants of our decisions on March 4th. In the meantime, you should also be aware that your Goucher financial aid application remains incomplete. If you wish to be considered for need-based assistance and need to know what is missing from your file, please contact Sharon Hassan, Director of Student Financial Aid, at shassan@goucher.edu – she will be happy to personally assist you.

A hard-copy duplicate of this message will also be mailed to you within the next day or two, and a copy of that letter will be placed in your admissions file. I hope that you will share this information with your parent/guardian, and I encourage you to contact me directly, simply by replying to this email message, should you have further questions or concerns. We made a mistake in mailing to you the letter of last week, and we’re doing our best to make things right. We appreciate your interest in Goucher and hope to be able to serve you in pursuit of your educational goals.

Sincerely,
Michael O’Leary

Any thoughts? Did anyone else receive this? Grr. Can't say I'm pleased with this but I guess I'll just have to wait a few more weeks.

That's terrible. At a minimum, they should have reviewed your file and let the offer of admission stand or change it to a rejection. To just say, "sorry, but keep on waiting" seems extremely unprofessional. Sorry you had to be at the other end of a letter like that.

Did your acceptance letter come in a large envelope from admissions, with a cover letter from admissions? You mention the email said that the letter was mistakenly sent from the office of financial aide. I wonder if the package that my d received today is a mistake or an acceptance.

My S's acceptance was sent from admission's in a large envelope.

Longeyemom,
Is thomaspaine your son, or did yet another person recieve an acceptance this week, that might question its validity?

I also received an acceptance letter from the office of financial aid and the email that said the letter was sent by mistake. However, in the email they told me that I had in fact been accepted but had to wait for the "official" letter which would come in a few weeks.

My d received the same letters. First the letter of congratulations on her acceptance from the financial aid office. Then the letter letting her know it was a mistake. I was told by Goucher that this letter was mailed to 200 families. This is a terrible mistake! My d was eagerly waiting & was so excited when she thought she was accepted. She actually posted it on her facebook & myspace & told all her friends and family. Now, she's feeling embarrassed & rejected.

For such a small school to have made such a gross error is surely troubling. I’m wondering if this is should be taken as a warning sign. Thinking we should call to confirm my son’s acceptance…
