Hi everyone,

I really need your help here..
I currently got a cumulative GPA of 3.9 (scale: 4) but on the commonapp, I reported that it is a weighted GPA, because that is what my high school told me. However, after reading carefully the meaning of the unweighted GPA, I think that my GPA is unweighted not weighted. A B in an AP class does bring my grade down significantly. And a B in an AP class is not equivalent to an A in a regular class. Thus, is it supposed to be called "unweighted" ? In my school, no one has ever got more than an average of 4.0 GPA as the maximum is 4. A+=4, A=4, A-=3.7. 1.5 credits are given to an AP class, while only 1 credit is given to a regular class. Does this mean the GPA is weighted or unweighted? I am worried right now because I have already submitted all my applications. It would be hard to change anything. But I have already submitted my transcript so will the universities know that my GPA is actually unweighted from looking at my transcript?
Is there anything I could do? Will this affect anything?
3.9 on a weighted scale is considered a low GPA so it will misrepresent my actual performance at my school.

I appreciate your replies.
Thanks

If your counselor told you weighted it most likely is because of the AP class being 1.5 credits. If you have a copy of your transcript it may say (weighted) or (unweighted) next to your gpa. Definately ask your counselor and if it is unweighted make another version of your common app and change it.

Thanks for your reply.

On my transcript, it doesn’t say if my GPA is “weighted” or “unweighted.” But if it is actually weighted, does it mean that some students in my school would be able to get even 4.4 GPA ? But that has never happened before. No one ever gets more than 4. Therefore, doesn’t it mean my GPA is actually unweighted? If my GPA is based on an weighted scale, it looks bad … my school confirms that it is weighted, but … I don’t quite get it. What could I do … ?

If your gpa is on a 4 point scale it is unweighted- meaning if you had the best grades possible it would still be a 4.0. It does seem strange that no one gets over a 4.0 and they confirm it is weighted. I guess just ask for an explanation because I’m not really sure. Sorry, good luck!

Hi again, everyone… I have already emailed universities that my GPA is actually unweighted. However, they have not replied to me at all. Should I bother sending them a second email, repeating that my GPA is unweighted? Some universities did reply back to me, confirming that they have received my message and added this new info to my profile. Two of the universities I applied to, however, did not reply at all… what should I do then ?

At this point, I don’t think you need to send another email. You’ve contacted them once and they already have your transcript anyway so they know what your GPA is officially - plus they’ve got a report from your counselor explaining how your school’s grading system is, so I wouldn’t worry about it.

Good luck! :)
