MIT 2016 hopefuls

Well Cobalt (II) Fluoride is red in color… Makes sense. Thanks for clearing things up Mollie.

I just read my application again and ■■■, my optional essay is so bad!!! I just ranted about why I wanted to go to MIT so badly, and now I realize it was probably really preachy. I mean, of course I want to go to MIT; everyone does or else they wouldn’t apply. facepalm Gah I hope that essay doesn’t ruin my chances :(

No, no, I’m just teasing. I’m pretty sure supermariodee is teasing, too.

“Let’s release the decisions one day later than last year and watch people try to guess our motives.”

I wrote an optional essay that… well, it wasn’t directly about wanting to go to MIT, but it was basically a ramble I wrote just before submitting my application – there were some things I just needed to say. The day after I submitted, I facepalmed and felt really dumb. (Spoilers: I got into MIT.)

Years later - just a month ago, actually - I reread that essay, just because. And I realized that it was probably so key to my application. I think at the time I was just embarrassed that I had rambled about more… I don’t know, personal thoughts? But I think that was a spot that gave them important information they might not have gotten otherwise. It was a bit of perspective, rereading years later.

May not be your case - but hey, it might. Don’t panic ^_^

They should do this every year! Zero failure modes!

Hey, I have a question.
Do you think someone who got rejected from Caltech still has a chance at MIT?

Quick questions:

Please tell me how can I guarantee that the MIT recommendation is translated truely(I`m Mongolian).
And how can I know that MIT is reading my letters knowing that this is mine without confusion that there are many other students are faxing at the same time as I am?

About sending the grades is my understanding correct that counselor should fill my grades average in that box and that`s it???

Yes. For one thing, the schools are not looking for the exact same traits - you may be a better fit for one and not the other.

^What are the different things they look for?

1+2+1+7=11

is 1011 base 2. On 10/11, 2000 nasa launched the 100th mission with space shuttle discovery!

How cool of you guys to choose 1217!

I’m hoping 12:17 on 12/17 is a sign, seeing as my application was submitted at 10:31 on 10/31!

^How was the server still functioning 1.5 hours before the deadline?

I’m hoping they like my essays. The odd thing about them was that unlike all my other college essay, I didn’t obsessively check them, like they felt fine after a few spell checks. Although, looking back, I. Could have done so much more with them. Anyways, I’ll be at home at 11:17(Central) so at least I’ll be alone if I’m deferred/ rejected. Although, if I’m accepted, I’m running around my neighborhood to tell random people

I am Egyptian I go 2 a public high school & I am applying to MIT.
no one from my school has ever applied anywhere outside Cairo. None of my teachers, friends or family have even heard of MIT
I mean, I had to explain 2 my teachers a zillion times over, what a “recommendation letter” is.
So obviously, I will be landing some less than stellar rec. letters.
I do not doubt that the teachers I have asked believe in my abilities, but probably they won’t do a good job as teachers who formally have a clue what recommendations are all about (those who have been doing it for years)
Does the admission committee understand that? would I be disadvantaged if my recommendations are not as ideal??

I logged into decisions.mit.edu to make sure my username and all that was working and I got a letter that said this:

On behalf of the Admissions Committee, it is my pleasure to offer you admission to the MIT Class of 2016. You stood out as one of the most promising students in the most competitive applicant pool in the history of the Institute. Your commitment to personal excellence and principled goals has convinced us that you will both contribute to our diverse community and thrive within our academic environment…

But when I refreshed the page, went to login again, etc. I couldn’t get the letter to show it just said: You have successfully confirmed your ability to view your decision online, which will be available beginning at 12:17PM EST (Eastern Standard Time) on Saturday, December 17th.

Did anybody else experience this? Was it a glitch in the system?

^nope, but that could only be a good sign for you!

Is it? I called admissions and they said that it doesn’t necessarily mean I got accepted. I was really excited for like 30 seconds.

Did it say “Dear [your name]” at the top?

Yes it said Dear Rick Stewart [Address]

Are they just trying to cover up their gaff or do you think it was really a mistake? I had a 2220 on the SAT so I figured MIT was a bit of a stretch but I will be so excited if I get. Do I just have to wait until Saturday?
