MIT 2016 hopefuls

The admit rate for deferred applicants is around 5%.

hey all, MIT '15 student here

feel free to message me any questions you have about MIT

Congratulations to those that have been accepted. If you have been deferred, do not give up hope! i have several friends who were deferred but got in RD.

Deferred …

@zrathustra
The nice thing is, though, that random chance doesn’t have too much to do with it (as far as I can tell from how they describe the process). That doesn’t mean that you can predict admission in all but extreme cases (literal 12 year-old genius, etc.), but they don’t flip a coin between two applicants.

Also, the admission rate for all Regular Applicants is within half a percentage point of 6%, so I think that it’s mainly that there are just so many applicants in regular.

Deferred…oh well

@Cortana -

Did you get into Cornell binding ED? If so, I believe you are required to withdraw all of your other applications.

Also - while I understand the experimental mindset that would lead one to wait to see “hey will I get in to MIT”, please understand that your decision to do so costs the people in our office extra work, and extra attention that could go to people who actually might attend MIT. I know you didn’t mean it this way, but it is really not a nice thing to do.

Accepted!

To all the deferred and rejected: Keep your head up! I wish you guys the best of luck with your other applications!

oh hey congragulations!! any wise words for us regular action applicants?

@Abrayo: where are you from and could you direct me to your result post in the thread??

For those applying RD, the best advice I can give you is to really show personality in your application! I took a huge risk in my app by being bubbly and quirky, but it paid off – got accepted yesterday!

When I stayed overnight at MIT, a whole bunch of the freshmen talked about how personable they were in their applications – one girl’s “Midyear Report” included a picture of a bunch of dinosaur doodles she drew.

Don’t try too hard to sound like “The Mit Student;” just be your wonderful self! Don’t be shy =)

WHAT?? okay I donno what the mid year report looks like but where is the space to put doodles ahahahaha!??

How do you know if you are deffered?

Mine says “The Admissions Committee has completed its review of your application and I am very sorry to tell you that we are unable to offer you admission to MIT.”

This is rejection or defferal?

^ That is a rejection.

Aw alright okay! Thanks!

Deferred begins: “We have completed our Early Action review of your application and have chosen to defer it to our Regular Action review time.”

Accepted! yay!

I’m currently filling out my MIT apps and the fields for extracurriculars are limited. Am I allowed to list certain things, and then perhaps write an essay about another? Will admissions officers get the hint? Will they be annoyed by my sneakiness? Or does everyone do this?

You are certainly allowed to do whatever you want. The reason the list is limited is that the admissions officers would like to hear about your most important ECs – the ones that are nearest and dearest to your heart. But if you have more ECs you’d like to discuss in the application, you should feel free to do so.

@ acspgs05 Are international students allowed to apply for EA to MIT? I thought that not.

Supermariodee was deferred but not defeated.

I WILL BE BACK BEAVERS!!!
