MIT Cheerleaders

this might be a little off topic, but one of my current interests is sociology and I just happened read this interesting paper that’s actually relevant to this!

It's hosted no where else than at the great MI of T.
http://smg.media.mit.edu/classes/Identity2004/ZebrowitzHallRhodes.2002.pdf

It's entitled "Looking smart and looking good: Facial cues to intelligence and their origins” the conclusion is that it might have some evolutionary basis..

Also of interest might be "Why beautiful people are more intelligent"
which can be found at http://www.lse.ac.uk/collections/methodologyInstitute/pdf/SKanazawa/I2004.pdf

anyway... I'll end this brief spurt of nerdiness and paper suggestion before its gets to long :)

dude, nobody ever said there was a correlation between 'intelligence' and 'beauty'
chill, people are still going to worship mit

damn, didnt see the post previous
"Critics have noted that people have the opposite stereotype that extremely attractive women are unintelligent. We do not believe such a stereotype exists, however. We instead believe that the stereotype is that blonde women and women with large breasts are unintelligent, both of which, just like the stereotype that beautiful people are intelligent, may statistically be true." - from paper 2
somebody just got dissed

who might that be?

the papers I referenced talk about attractiveness largely from the biological sense. What many people have very accurately mentioned is that today how attractive someone is, is often a function of how much time/effort/money they spend on being attractive! =P

still, i think its weird that in real life the exact opposite happens
all the hot girls at my school are def not in AP classes and they probably cant even spell "unintelligent" correctly - it just seems like if your more attractive you can get more friends and you dont have the incentive to learn

I don't care if they're beautiful or not.

They go to MIT. I respect that a lot more than the looks of the "hot blonde" cheerleaders that may go to other schools.

First, my daughter is a varsity cheerleader, scored high enough on the PSAT for NMSF (& hopefully NMF) and National Hispanic Scholar, has won state and national academic awards (in addition to national competitive cheerleading championships), is in three honor societies and makes A's in all her AP and AP-Dual classes. She is a very smart girl who also happens to be an extremely talented athlete. And least importantly, she is also a pretty girl (everyone says she is a ringer for Sandra Bullock).

Second, cheerleading is not about poms and lipgloss anymore. Haven't you ever seen a cheer competition on ESPN? It is a serious sport! You try throwing whips to fulls and tossing a 100 lb flyer 20 feet into the air! The link you posted for the MIT cheerleaders is titled "Competitive Squad". Those young ladies are not competing without skills. So in addition to being wicked smart and very pretty, the MIT cheerleaders should be respected for their athletic abilities.

Bad bad bad stereotyping!!!

But let's be honest here...although none are absolutely hideous, this is the most unattractive cheerleading team I have ever seen. At least they're smart...

That's not true at my school. Many of the girls in my school are smart and pretty. Girls in AP classes won "class pinup, best dressed, and most likely to succeed". These girls are very smart and are looking at top schools. Also none of the other cheerleaders are in AP classes excpet me.

Let's see... at my high school Voted Most Likely to Succeed: me - I can say I'm not ugly but just average and the other girl - very pretty. In my AP Calculus BC class (the hardest class at my school and the one only the most dedicated get to take) out of the four girls and four guys there - 2 of 4 guys are really attractive and the other 2 are average. 2 of the girls are very pretty (1 is stunning) and the other 2 are average. I don't think any of the people in my AP classes are ugly. But the generally agreed upon "babes" at our school are definitely not in any of my AP classes, alas. They are mostly sporty, cheerleady, and average students.

we [edit:] at my school [/edit] definitely do have our share of intelligent and beautiful girls.

an aspect that i don't think has come up is that fact that these girls might not be motivated to work when they can get by and have the attention that they may want.

btw, a friend of mine EA'd to MIT as class of 09. she cheers, is pretty, and takes a major course load. so there are exceptions

I'm not sure if this has been mentioned or not, but one MIT cheerleader (?) - at least I know she was a MIT graduate in CS - went on to cheer for the San Francisco 49ers.

For every "exception" to this unwritten rule I'm sure there is a reinforcing case.

It really doesn't matter.

I do, however, prefer drill. It's cooler to see the people go all twirly as opposed to... not.
And techno > hip-hop :)

Just because someone can't spell, doesn't take AP's, and isn't voted most likely to succeed, they aren't stupid. Just to show my cynical side, one possibility is that they are more interested in other things that an uglier person wouldn't have the opportunity to engage in. Thereby, the good-looking smart people spent more time flirting than paying attention in elementary school when one ordinarily learns the foundation necessary to take and succeed in AP courses (including the attitude and desire--and yes the ability to spell). Perhaps by growing up like this the intelligent yet pretty person now is a bit behind the herd and has aspirations not involving education.

emmittisgod - agreed

I don't really care what they look like because I'd just be happy to hear this cheer:

I'm a Beaver, you're a Beaver, we are Beavers all.
And when we get together, we do the Beaver call.

Also...I know it's an accepted fact that cheerleaders are supposed to be hot, but can non-hot people not incite enthusiasm from a crowd.

it's fortunate that MIT is in Boston...

wow......
this is all extremely disappointing..............

The last two comments have been so vague that I have no clue what they are insinuating. why is it fortunate? what is disappointing? ???

Well, I do know that there's a math teacher at my school that says her neighbor's daughter is going to MIT and that she's a babe. I have yet to find a picture, but it gives me some hope.
