MIT Class of 2021 Applicants

Why Tau…classic Vi Hart: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jG7vhMMXagQ

@Lvillegrad http://mitadmissions.org/blogs/entry/pi-day-tau-time

@cbsuth: That seems to confirm it. My other thought was that 6 and 28 are the first two perfect numbers.

(pi is still the cooler circle constant.)

@scarletwitchx

Hell yea! Nothing beats our beloved pi.

Just wondering how many days after the decisions so accepted students get their tubes?

I prefer Tau because it simplifies the observing of angle measurements on the unit circle.

Date = Pi (probably because it is a very popular constant and irrational number. We were taught Pi since 2nd grade)
Time = 2 × Pi (they could prefer Pi time, but might be possible that Mathematicians at MIT are high at 6:28pm (for no reason), so they chose Tau and not Pi Time)

That moment when you know you’re going to get rejected, but still feel as if there is a ray of hope :stuck_out_tongue:

Anyone who is uneducated enough to think pi is better than Tau doesn’t deserve to get into MIT

jk but not really tho

When you have a vivid dream that you got accepted. Oh mind, you are playing games again.

Just about everybody here is ganging up on poor old Pi, so I thought I’d come to it’s defense. The most well-known of all formulas involving Pi is not Euler’s formula (though that might be true for MIT applicants). It’s the formula for the are of a circle. I would bet that more people know that than any other Pi-based formula. And look what happens to that formula when you substitute Tau for Pi:

Π * r^2 becomes ½Τr^2

Who’s simplifying now???

What does everyone plan on studying?
(any humanities people?)

& euler’s identity becomes annoying too–like why say root(e)^taui = -1 when you can just say e^pii = -1?

if we define coolness as 1/value, then pi is cooler than tau.

Could this nor’easter heading up this week cause decisions to be delayed?

@scarletwitchx Euler’s identity becomes e^(tau*i) = 1 if you square both sides …

@Lvillegrad There is a good argument for that too :stuck_out_tongue:

@ptolemycleopatra I can’t imagine so. One has to think that these decisions are pretty much ready to go at this point.

@ptolemycleopatra ^^yeah you’ll get the decision, but I suppose the physical copy might be held up in the post depending on where you live

me: do not think about MIT for the next three days
me to me: read 5000 blogs and cry
