mit classes

because Wellesley is an all girls school, i’m taking solace in the idea of taking classes at mit (especially because i want to study math and i have mit on a pedestal, rightly so or not). i was wondering if any wellesley woman has had experience taking an mit class and if it's unpractical or any other basic info about it.

I have yet to take a class at MIT but I know several people who have and it's not unpractical at all. Wellesley makes it as painless as possible. MIT's course catalogue is even listed on Wellesley's Registrar office. From what I've heard, the biggest hurdle to overcome is time. It takes about 30-40 minutes to get to MIT. Adding class time and the ride back, you're looking at 3-4 hours you must free up in order to take a class. It's doable, but you'd have to have free afternoons. Or mornings, or evenings. Whatever.

Anyways, many many MANY Wellesley students take advantage of this great opportunity to study at MIT. Their humanities are not bad either.

The Wellesley/MIT exchange bus leaves every hour on the hour.

Hope this helps :)

You definitely have to schedule your classes around the commute time. When I was at Wellesley in the 70s, I started cross-registering at MIT during my sophomore year. I took writing classes because they met only once a week in the evening and students could sit around and drink wine during class (remember, it was the 70s!). By spring of junior year, I decided to try MIT full-time for my senior year. (I had attended an all-girls' high school prior to going to an all-women's college--students are very picky about how one describes Wellesley.) It was a wonderful experience. (I was a music and English major.)
