Hi everyone, I am a rising junior who plans on applying to MIT, and I also plan on double majoring in neurobiology/neuroscience and finance through Sloan. Is this something I would be able to do?
Please let me know how this would work in the admissions process and at the school. Thank you!
Yes, you can double major in Course 9 and 15. You’ll have to satisfy the general institute requirements as well as those for Course 9 and 15, which means you’ll probably have to take one class more per semester than your classmates. Double majoring is made easier if you come in with class credits and pass a few advanced standing exams.
One applies to MIT for general admission.
At the end of freshman year or early sophomore year, one declares one’s first major.
At the end of/after the third term, providing you maintain a 4.0 (=B average) GPA, you petition to add the second major.
You MUST have completed certain requirements including 1 communication requirement per major, plus be on track to finish in four or five years.
As brassratter said, if you can start off with some ASE’s or have certain classes under your belt, it’s more doable. Otherwise double-majors are a bear.
E.g.,
AP Calculus BC, Score of “5” = 18.01
AP Physics C, both Mechanics and E&M, Score of “5” = 8.01
