Hi guys! Did any of you receive an interview email from MIT? I submitted my application two weeks ago, and I’m still waiting for it.
Same here.
Does MIT actually select applicants for interviews?
Same here.
I don’t think they select applicants for interviews.
For the two different areas of the US that I have lived in and done interviews for, the ECs are assigned to specific high schools. The assigned EC would then do the interviews for those schools. The problem is that there are some high schools with no assigned ECs. Not enough ECs. Other ECs might have a larger number of applicants than they can handle.
No prereads or any other assessments that I know of are done. It just comes down to a numbers game. MIT states that applicants are not penalized for not being offered an interview.
@HPuck35 - At my son’s school, all of his friends have been contacted but he has not. Is this normal? There are probably only 6-8 total kids applying from his school.
I just had my interview with MIT. I agree that it depends on the amount of people applying and time the interviewer has.
My daughter had her interview two weeks ago. It took over 90 minutes. It’s time-consuming for the interviewer. I think the interviewer gave my daughter some slots within the following 7 days to pick from. Maybe you’ll hear from your interviewer for next week soon.
My son applied on 10/31 and was contacted yesterday 11/13 for an interview. The interviewer lives 600 miles away so there’s an advantage in using Zoom!
MIT alumni association is looking for more interviewers. They are obviously trying hard to interview as many as possible.
HMom16, a few questions / comments:
Have him check his spam folder. The email may not come from an MIT account but from the EC’s personal account. I use a personal email account.
Did your son apply later than his classmates? I get notified as the applications are submitted. Some ECs will limit their number of interviews based on how much time they have. If so, he may get reassigned to another EC.
Have him check that MIT believes that his application is complete. It doesn’t need to have all the letters of recommendation and the high school guidance report but must have all the student info submitted. Only after all the student info is there will he be assigned to an EC for an interview.
Interview reports are due Nov 21 but those using Quest bridge are due before that and do get some priority.
I’d have your son email the admissions department, if he hasn’t already, to inquire what’s going on.
If he doesn’t get a request for an interview, MIT will not hold that against him.
Thanks @HPuck35 that’s very helpful. He was planning to call them next week anyway because they show his school info as missing but the guidance department sent everything almost 3 weeks ago.
My daughter heard from the MIT interviewer yesterday (she applied 10/31).
would it possible to share the interview questions and suggest how to prepare for the interview? Thanks
There are no set questions for the interview. Each interviewer is free to ask whatever he or she wants within a set of guidelines that MIT provides. I ask different questions for just about every interview. The interviews are to be more of a conversation and I let the conversation go where it wants to go.
I’ve just had my interview today!
Here’s an odd thing - my kid’s GC called to followup on paperwork that was sent back in Oct and not yet showing as received. Apparently my kid had two accounts so his app was in one and the paperwork was in the other. They are merging the accounts but I think this means the application won’t show up as complete until then. This could be why he didn’t get an interview. Hopefully the duplicate accounts and delay in merging won’t impact his admissions chances.
My son hasn’t received his interview email yet. We called the admission office last week and they asked us to contact interview@mit.edu. We haven’t heard anything back still.
My son just had his interview after submitting his application early October ( 10/10). Turned out that since he has 2 separate high schools he wasn’t assigned an EC when his application was marked complete.
Then, when this was finally cleared up, the interview email went into spam! He had less than hour to prepare when he finally connected.
Good luck everyone and check your spam!
@DGSchu a similar thing happened to me. Gmail decided to sort the interviewer’s email into the “promotions” tab along with the rest of the college promotions. Fortunately, I caught it early on.
