There was a CPW app that you download that admitted students sign up for all sorts of fun activities, and
it can show which conflict time-wise, and send you a reminder when an activity is coming up next.
Not sure when the 2023 app will be available.
Read through this CPW link.
“CPW is for students only. But don’t worry—we’re hosting a virtual parents program in late March! We’ll email you (at the email address on your application) detailed information about CPW in the coming months. In the interim, don’t forget to register for CPW by hitting that big orange button below!”
Congratulations on the admission! Would you be able to provide more info on music portfolio? My son is a musician and a composer (alternate music mostly) and wondering if we need to submit a music portfolio.
Portfolios are 100% optional. However, if an applicant has spent a lot of time on something they care deeply about, and would like to share it with admissions, especially if they feel it will add to, and enhance their application, I strongly encourage them to submit a portfolio. I believe that the relevant department, in this case, the music department, will evaluate the portfolio and let admissions know if they feel that this is a strength for the candidate. According to MIT, there is no downside, no negative, no minus, from submitting a portfolio
Is your son applying next fall? I recommend taking a look at the slide room portfolio submissions well in advance. The music portfolio requires a music résumé and a letter of recommendation from a music teacher. My daughter did not realize this and was left, scrambling to put those together. Fortunately, she was able to get it in on time.
Appreciate the info very much! He is a sophomore currently. It takes a few months for him to create one song and hence the need to plan if non-classical music will be considered by the music department. I have mostly read about classical musicians submitting portfolios and hence the question.
My kid submitted classical music but I definitely think they are open to musicians and composers of other genres.
What I would suggest is to look at the Slideroom portfolios when they open back up next year. He can make note of the formats, short answer /recommendation/resume requirements. My hunch is they remain fairly consistent year to year.
Thanks for the detailed response. Unfortunately, my son won’t be able to make it to CPW… I asked him and he said a couple of his seniors (in MIT now) also missed it and is not worried too much. Would he be missing anything by not attending?
Is/Will you son be deciding between MIT and other colleges?
If he’s torn, then CPW is very helpful.
But if he’s already decided yes MIT, or no MIT, then he doesn’t need CPW.
CPW is for the student,
allowing a deeper dive into MIT (see many/all dorms, lab tours, speak personally with professors, attend classes, try all the cafe food, etc), than whatever generic tour/admission info session he’s had.
