MIT International Interviews: India

Hey, everybody! I am an international applicant to MIT for fall 2017. I heard that interviews are selective in nature for Indians and that the tick against the tracking indicator for interviews disappears from the accounts for those being considered for admission. My tick hasn’t still gone. I had some issues with application materials not reaching MIT because they were mistakenly not placed on my file, which delayed the completion of my application. I contacted MIT Admissions to sort this issue and it was fixed very recently. However, since most of the interviews have already been offered and there’s no telling when and if I’ll get one I am too anxious about it. Is it true that applications aren’t read unless they are complete with all required materials on file? Is it possible that I’ll still get an interview? Please Help!

I think that alumni interviewers are supposed to submit the reports by the end of February. Considering that, for how long still would MIT be offering interviews to Indian applicants or those nationals for which MIT has a similar policy?

MIT is one of the few schools for which international applicants get interviews just like US applicants. Once you register for myMIT, without even starting your app, you should be assigned to and EC (if available–if your interview was waived for any reason by MIT themselves and not that you had the chance to do an interview but didn’t, it WON’T impact your app negatively at all!).

I had my interview in October, without even starting to fill the application.

There is no need for you to worry.

@ahmedsheta are you an international applicant, more specifically Indian?

I am from the middle east, but the process is typically the same. Maybe for other colleges, it would have varied, but as I mentioned, MIT assigns an EC to every applicant before receiving the application.

No, the interview process is selective for Indian nationals. I don’t have doubts about that and it’s not my question anyway.

I couldn’t figure how could interviews be selective when the deadline for contacting the interviewer is 10th of December, which means that not all apps have been received. And I can’t figure out where could it be selective given how interviews are assigned, which is quoted from MIT’s website:

You will receive your Educational Counselor’s (EC) name and contact information via your MyMIT account.
Please note that, unlike many other schools, at MIT you must contact your interviewer! If you are applying during Early Action, you must contact your interviewer by October 20th; Regular Action applicants must contact their interviewers by December 10

If, however, what you “heard” makes you believe “without doubts” that MIT’s website is incorrect, then that is totally up to you to believe as you wish!

There’s a lot that happens behind the scenes. It is merely the number and credentials of applicants from countries like India and China that MIT has different admission policies for them. I am pretty well informed on this because I have had a lot of friends going through the same process last year, only that the details of how and when it’s done is unclear to me. Anyway, thank you for your effort; I appreciate that you want to help! How was your experience? Applied RD right?

Most Welcome!

And yup, I applied RD, and waiting for the decisions. Around a month remaining!

Yeah, but with no interview for me till now, I am kind of losing hope… Anyway I wish you luck!

Even though you’re not convinced, I am still on my position that your chances aren’t affected at all, and just hold on–MIT students aren’t expected to give up their dreams that easily :wink:

Best of luck!!

The deadline for interview reports was January 6 for domestic interviews. No reason to think international would be different as the international applications are due at the same time as domestic applications.

It seems to be a common conception that interviews for Indian applicants are only granted to the more qualified ones. However, this conception seems to only arise among applicants themselves and is in direct opposition to the stated policy on the MIT web site. The timing of the interview within the application process looks to me to support the MIT web site. How can one determine whether to grant an interview when you may not have submitted your application and the turnaround time from application due to interview report due is so short.

Anyways, believe what you wish and good luck.

@HPuck35 @ahmedsheta A friend of mine received an invitation for interviewing with an alum on February 10, 2017. This is what exactly confuses me. The website says just another story but the reality is different. Another person I know got an interview on Feb 2. So there is absolutely no way to believe that their interview reports are reaching MIT before the end of February if they have their interviews in the last two weeks of the month. I think there truly is a difference between domestic and international interview processes.

@MITChris

@MITChris

@MITChris is not gonna reply. MIT interviews in India are highly selective. no doubt about that. They will be held or have been held in this month.
I don’t have an international Olympiad medal but I have a hell lot of national awards but I haven’t received an interview. It is just depressing. I come from a small city in India. I mailed the admissions office but they say it has been waived. I wonder why MIT doesn’t give a chance to students from smaller cities. This just sucks. Give me a chance dammit !

^^^ @seeadmit:
Are you implying by waiving the interview, MIT is already deciding to not give you a chance for admission?

@jpm50 Exactly. If there’s no interview, you’re getting rejected. 100% sure. I know many will now oppose this “FACT” but trust me, have a backup and don’t be delusional. Best of Luck.

But there are people who don’t do interviews (without waiving them) that are accepted every year…

@seeadmit:
@ManaManaWegi is correct.

I honestly pray that you are correct. But youre not. have a happy time being delusional and then get f**ked in the end. Seriously dont waste your time hoping.
