MIT Interview?

I plan on applying regular decision to MIT and I have heard from numerous people that having an interview can make the difference. So i went onto MIT's website and got the email address and home phone number of an alum i can contact around my area. How should I go about doing this? Tips?

No special process required, just call or send email, introduce yourself, and say you'd like to arrange an MIT interview. These are experienced alums, known in MIT-speak as "ECs" -- Educational Counselors -- and they're used to getting these calls or emails. Your EC will let you know when they can meet with you and will let you know the next steps.

The contact you're making with the EC now is only to set up the interview time and location, not to conduct the actual interview itself.

I prolly apply to MIT. An MIT alum works under my dad, maybe i can get an interview from him. Easy to contact etc.

Not every alum is an EC, actually, very, very few are. Those who are EC's, will have quite clear instructions on their role in the admissions process. Just because you know an MIT alum does not usually help with the interview.

As for contacting your EC, just write an e-mail. We are used to getting such e-mails and if you have been given the name of an EC to contact, chances are likely that the EC has been given your name to as a prospective applicant who may contact them (exception: not always true with international EC's). The interview can be a good chance to ask any other questions about MIT that you still are looking to find out.

Hints: Don't ask anything that you could find without any trouble on the website (for example: "What majors does MIT offer?" (which I have been asked more than once)), and if you are going to ask something that is going to require the EC to do some research, it may be helpful to warn them in advance (e.g. "I have a lot of questions about the MIT Judo team, can you talk me through the tryout process?").

Enjoy the interview,
-Mikalye (an EC)

adding to the interview questions, do i have to have sent in my application already before doing an interview?

One more to add, my EC is listed with three names in the mymit area. Is this just his middle name or does he perhaps have a hyphenated last name (no hyphen is present however)?
