MIT - Mech. Engineering

I am looking to obtain a MS in MechE from MIT.

School: University of Wisconsin-Madison
GPA: 3.65
Graduation: May 2014
Research experience:
-1 semester in the solar lab researching economically feasible energy systems for space heating applications.
-Fellowship in the Engine Research Center quantifying the effect of temperature on fuel rate of injection and rate of injection profile. Publishing is a possibility towards the end of this semester.
Work Experience:
-Internship in Aerospace Industry - Product Design & Data Analysis
-Internship in Oil Industry- Heat Exchangers & Rotating Equipment

Rec's: 3 recommendations from faculty members in ME who are in my intended field of study (Thermal Sciences), and can speak to my intellectual capability and research potential. They are MIT, Stanford, and UW Madison grads, respectively.

GRE Scores: I have not taken it yet, but assume that I will receive a near 800Q score and an above average Verbal.

I would like to attend MIT for an MS in the thermal sciences. What do you think my chances are?

Do you have backup plans? MIT is fine to have as a reach but it is a reach for anyone at all levels.

Yes. If I do not get into MIT, I will attend UW Madison and conduct research with two of the professors who will be writing my letters of recommendation. I have been given an unofficial offer to attend. I also plan to apply to other top U’s such as Stanford, Berkeley, Michigan, and UIUC; however, MIT seems to be the only U I would choose over Wisconsin at this point. This is subject to change, though.
